Maybe God is blessing us and this movie is dying fast.

Saw a advertisement for it last evening. Looked like something I might want to go see.

Why do you believe I shouldn't?

Well, this link pretty much sums it nicely, even if it is from WorldNetDaily (first link handy from google). Even snopes.com has an article about it.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=58341

Pullman is an avowed atheist whose goals are to essentially destroy Christianity. I’m not even a Christian technically, but the thought of that gives me chills.

And what he tries to teach kids, with homosexual angels, and pleasures of the body!

Unbelievable.

The books this movie is based upon are anti-God and anti-religion.

Do a search on FreeRepublic and you will find several links that will provide you with in-depth information on the Author and the Movie.

I saw this extremely odd movie last night. It had intriguing special effects, incoherent script, an annoying random moment ending right with the obvious beginning of a sequel.

The author is some kind of raving demented off-his-meds atheist, who claims this peculiar movie and its sequels will kill organized religion.

After seeing this completely incoherent, computer graphics to the annonying hilt jibberish last night, God remains safe in the human heart.

Why do you believe I shouldn't?

This is a personal question that each of us must answer for him/her self. If you think it looks interesting, then by all means you should go see it.

The reviews I've read indicate that the author of the book on which the movie was based is an ardent Atheist and desperately wants to destroy the idea of the actual existence of a Supreme Being, a Deity, of God.

I don't need or want to see such a movie and I would advise my Christian friends to avoid it as well and to tell their young children, "No, you may see it when you are of age to make discerning choices based on your own judgment but not now." The movie will almost certainly be on DVD before long and will probably be available in the discount bins at WalMart, Cosco, and Target before very long as well.

If you think you might like it (and are already leaning in the direction of Agnosticism or Atheism), then as an adult, you have the absolute right to see it (and if you are leaning toward Agnosticism or Atheism, I know this isn't what you want to hear - if I'm right about my belief in God, He gave you the Right to not believe in Him).

It’s based on a book where the author has explicity said he is trying to undermine Christianity.

Now, I’m all for his right to write the book (and make a movie of it).

However, my family and I won’t spend our money to help further the author’s cause.

Others have already answered, but I’ll add my 2 cents. Phillip Pullman wrote these books, aimed specifically at children, for the express purpose of discrediting religion. They are pure propaganda. He is an avowed, and dedicated, atheist. If you, as an adult, want to see the film that is one thing, but if you’re taking impressionable children, I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. (I’m rather surprised the article only mentioned Catholic groups protesting the film though.)

I was stunned to find that Scholastic Books, probably the largest publisher of children's’ books here in the U.S., was distributing the Pullman books free of charge to elementary schools. I, as a former elementary school librarian, took immediate offense and sent email protesting. The American Library Association, of course, sees no problem with this distribution.

If you like, you can check out the reviews on rottentomatoes.com and decide for yourself. Like The DaVinci Code, all the controversy smothers the fact that it simply isn’t a very good movie. “A waste of time and money” as one critic put it. Personally I will never see this film because 1) it’s anti-Catholic and 2) I can’t stand Nicole Kidman. But to each their own.

P.S. If I want to see a children’s fantasy with a message I will watch The Dark Crystal or The Neverending Story on DVD.

Looked like something I might want to go see.Why do you believe I shouldn't?

Saw an advance screening on Dec. 1st.

I have no moral objections to the movie's contents.

However, I do object to the movie's quality. It stunk.

Director tried to cram at least 8 hours of content into 2 hours, emphasized the wrong parts of the book, and created an incoherent mess in the process.

Well,

Daughter # 2 went to see it last night with her boyfriend.

She said the anti-religion stuff is buried pretty deep and you would have to have read the books or hung out on the Internet to know about it.

Said it was a little violent for Daughter # 3 and that it’s rating was well deserved.

She said other than that - It was just not that good of a movie. Barely mid-level on the popcorn cruncher scale. Wait until it comes out on video.

The His Dark Materials books have been controversial with some Christian groups. Peter Hitchens has argued that Pullman actively pursues an anti-Christian agenda. In support of this contention, he cites an interview in which Pullman is quoted as saying: "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." In the same interview, Pullman also "acknowledge(s) that a controversy would be likely to boost sales. But I'm not in the business of offending people. I find the books upholding certain values that I think are important. Such as that this life is immensely valuable. And that this world is an extraordinarily beautiful place, and we should do what we can to increase the amount of wisdom in the world'."

If entertaining epic fantasies are enjoyable to you, you should see this movie. I did and it is well done. I have seen blatantly “pro-God” movies supported by evangelicals that did far more inadvertent damage to the image of religion. Mitt’s issue ducking speech did far more damage to Christians. The Magisterium is the ultimate bad guy, but it is not obviously the Roman Catholic Church. My PhD is in Religionswissenschaft and I could see how you could defend that conclusion but it is not obvious. You would have a greater argument with regard to the witchcraft themes in “Potter”.

In sum, it is, in my humble opinion, entertaining Epic Fantasy (and better such fare than “Beowulf”).

Educate yourself about the source material, and about the author. The author has stated, repeatedly, that the purpose of his trilogy is to undermine children's faith in God, and that this first installment is "eye candy" designed to lure unsuspecting children into his trap.

If you are OK with that, by all means go see the movie. You should have plenty of room in the theater...

Why do you believe I shouldn't?

Do you want to put dollars into the pocket of corporations who are invested into devaluing the very foundation this country was built on...........religious values

Go right ahead.

Yeah, those societies built on secularism worked so well.............

Even with ratings propped up, it is just only a C+ movie.

It is probably should be a D or D- movie.

From what one Freeper wrote about the movie, it was an incoherrent thing to go see -- it did not make much sense, and was just thrown together.

Hollywood [Great Britian] has invested about $200 million in this film, so you will see advertising as they are desparate to SUCKERS to go see a bad movie.

As W.C. Fields said, "There is a sucker born every minute"...
