As a kid, I remember a concoction of hot water, honey, lemon juice, (brandy optional) ,, stir well, drink some,, that usually seemed to help a little.

The folks down the street used a little whisky mixed in a honey jar. Man, I dug swiping a spoonful of that stuff when I was a kid.
