Absinthe Is Back
Time ^ | Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 | CAROLYN SAYRE

Want to party like it's 1899? Well, now you can--sort of. After nearly a century-long ban on absinthe in the U.S., a federal agency has begrudgingly allowed two European distillers to sell the mysterious liquor Stateside. Renowned for its supposedly hallucinogenic effects, the anise-flavored alcohol was rumored to have caused an epidemic of psychosis in France in the late 1800s--most infamously, leading Vincent van Gogh to cut off his ear.

.....snip.......

Regardless of exactly how potent absinthe is or isn't, Lehrman says one thing is certain: "If you drink three bottles, you are going to do something stupid."

Supposedly the nasty component is absent from this new absinthe. Maybe, maybe not.

More like the nasty component was never there to begin with. Odds are, if it's from the Czech Republic, or if it hypes the thujone content anywhere on the bottle, it's crap. Stay away from it.

I ordered a bottle of the Kübler 53 and it's darn near gone. It's good stuff.

If you're looking into it, check the reviews at The Absinthe Buyer's Guide at www.feeverte.net or the nice folks at The American Wormwood Society.

Several French/Swiss brands are in the process of gov't approval, one American distillary unveils its absinthe tomorrow and, I understand, three or four U.S. makers will be bringing their own brands to market in the coming months.

for its supposedly hallucinogenic effects

Watch Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" Paris episode where they get a hold of some older Absinthe. He starts to hallucinate like crazy.

I’ve swallowed a lot of Jim Beam Black and I’ve never seen what Bourdain did; in that capacity.

It’s different in that you’ll probably never see it on sale at Safeway.

It only takes half a bottle of jagermeister to arrive at the same result.

I've always said that Jagermeister is a drug mixed with alcohol...same with Sambuca. Stay away from that licorice stuff...

But knowing me I'll try anything once.
