1,000! Yipee!
Pittsburgh is the last team to have a legitimate chance of stopping the Pats. I wish them well. If they don’t, Dallas will win the rematch in Glendale, AZ.
Yikes, missed it by one post.
ESPN pulled out all the stops to try and jinx the Pats. Morris and Griese on Countdown, and Shula in the booth. Baltimore shouldve knocked off New England and satisfied all the haters out there, led by Tony Kornheiser and Mercury Morris. It was a heck of a game. I thought Baltimore was running their mouths pretty early, but they backed it up all night. Well, almost all night. The Pats failed to stop the run consistently, but somehow found a way to stop Baltimore twice at key moments in the fourth.
Do you think Shula had a bottle of Champagne up in that booth?
And finally, Mercury Morris. Well, he got his name in the paper, and he didn’t have to get sentenced to 20 years in the klink for cocaine possession like he did in 1986 the last time he was in the paper. When the guys at ESPN decided to put him on their program, did they say, “Hey, who can can we get from the ‘72 Dolphin team? Let’s see, any guys available who were sentenced to 20 years in prison for felony drug trafficking charges? we need some of those guys...” Congratulations Mercury! Your opinion matters!
Let’s put it this way: the Ravens won that game three times before Jabar Gaffney was handed a touchdown by the referees. He didn’t have possession of the ball, and the refs basically said, “Whatever, it’s past our bedtimes, here you go, guys.”
The Ravens only screwed themselves when Bart Scott lost it, and only in the sense that they lost a shot at good field position with a kick return. I also think there should have been a penalty call on the Hail Mary pass at the end, with the Ravens getting the ball at the 2 yard line with, oh, 2 seconds left on the clock.
Apparently Mike Vrable was screaming profanities at the refs after the game, and Brady/Moss bashed them in their postgame comments. What the hell kind of bizarro universe are they living in? The referees gave you a touchdown and the game! They didn’t call Randy Moss’ continued pushing off, but they certainly called phantom fouls on the defense when they attempted to cover him.
Mike Pereira needs to be fired, and he should take his cast of corrupt part-timers with him.
Disagreed on Rex Ryan. You’re speaking with hindsight when you say that.
I thought Gaffney had possession, looked to me like a solid two hand grip that he moved, deliberately, into a body tuck.
If there should have been a penalty on the Hail Mary it would have been OFFENSIVE interference, the non-catching Raven out right tackled a Pat defender. And the Ravens did plenty of screwing themselves throughout the game and they screwed themselves multiple times in the Pats final drive. If that final TD is over turned Scott’s temper tantrum does a lot worse than cost the Ravens field position.
Brady didn’t bash the refs at all in the post game interview I saw. One of the reporters asked him something about the officiating (really hard to hear, but definitely heard the word “officiating”) and Brady said there was no way he was going to comment.
The fact that both sides seem irritated at the refs to me says things were fine. Nobody is ever happy with officiating, especially not in an overly complicated game like the NFL, the best you can really hope for is equal breaks.
I was disgusted by the incredibly tacky talk about drinking champagne after the game and so on.
No they should be mad at Ryan, not just for the timeout but also for the changes in style. He forgot to dance with who brung im, they got to the point of maybe being able to win last night by constantly pressuring Brady, but on multiple critical downs (most notably the 4th and 6) all of a sudden the Ravens rushed 3 and let Brady stand around and contemplate the play. Sure maybe it might not have worked, maybe if they’d kept blitzing Brady would have found a way anyway, but whatever got you a lead at the 58 minute mark would seem to be the best strategy for the final 2, and Ryan noticeably changed strategies on the final drive.
Did you miss Mason interfering with Samuel as Assante was going to try and go up and make a play on that ball? Or do you live in the universe that says that the only PI call that could ever be valid has to be against the Pats? Samuel was the one guilty of interference because he had a WR’s arms holding him down around the neck and shoulders.
Moss didn’t get taken down in the end zone, he was just pushing off again and flopped down to get a call. The NFL is soooooo in the tank for the Pats.
Moss didn’t beat the defense for his TD on single coverage that denied him the outside. He pushed off on the invisible inside safety help. Where was the flag on that call??????
Watson wasn’t held for 5 yards off the line and into the end zone. That just the refs rigging the game for the Pats.
The Gaffney TD was inconclusive and didn’t meet the standards of ireffutable. However, given the thug life attitude of the Ravens, if the pass is overturned the ball is 1st and Goal on 1 yard line with 44 seconds left.
Tell me where Brady bashed the refs in the postgame from this comment:
What plays out there do you think the refs screwed up?
You tell me. I get fined if I say something. You guys watch it, and evaluate it, but
Your analysis on anything having to do with the Pats is moonbatesque.
“If that final TD is over turned Scotts temper tantrum does a lot worse than cost the Ravens field position.”
Absolutely. The two penalties from that would have put the ball on the 2 with a fresh set of downs and lots of time on the clock. The next holding call would have been fresh set of downs on the 1 and about 50 seconds on the clock. Even if the TD had been over turned, the only thing that would have happened would have been a Patriots TD with less time remaining for the Ravens to try to come back.
The Ravens played like the Ravens. They’ve found new ways to lose in several games this year. This shouldn’t be a surprise.
I disagree. And the fact that the refs agreed, after being able to watch it over and over again in hi-res indicates that it should not have been overturned.
Of course, we all know the refs are in it on the side of the Patriots...so that explains it...:)
LOL! Those were the days. Tickets weren't very hard to come by.
Favorite early '70s memory. Went to a Pats/Chiefs game where the Pats faced a fourth-and-61! Three consecutive sacks. I wish I could find the stat for the longest 4th down play.
No, I’m calling you on your bias that drips through every time you offer up some commentary that simply doesn’t jibe with reality.
I want whatever drug you took that enabled you to come to this conclusion. The ball was securely in his hands, he had both feet in the end zone, and he never once bobbled the ball---nor was he ever in jeopardy of making the catch.
I’m sorry, but it was pretty clear on my 10’’ SDTV here in my dorm room that Gaffney did not have possession of the ball, no HD replay needed. ESPN showed a field-level replay with Gaffney near a cameraman: he was bobbling the ball until he was firmly out of bounds. I don’t know how that one camera angle doesn’t embody the term “indisputable evidence.”
The refs goofed the call. I’m sure I’ll hear “but the Patriots were at the goal line and would probably have scored anyway if the TD was called back.” You know what? They probably would have. But at least then the touchdown would have actually occurred.
Playing not-to-lose. The Prevent prevents victory.
What reality? That Gaffney didn’t score a TD? Or the reality that I’m not a Pats homer?
Please. I hate the Jets, Bills, and Jaguars. I don’t hate the Patriots, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself that I do.
