Posted: Nov 28, 2007 11:24 AM

GRAND RAPIDS - Jesse Daniel Rae, who was beaten up by a older Marine while he was trying to rob him, plead guilty to assault with intent to rob Wednesday.

Rae tried to rob Bill Barnes, 72, at a convenience store in Alpine Township in early summer. Barnes quickly got the upper hand on Rae, 27, and the incident was caught on surveillance cameras.

Rae will be sentenced January 28 and faces up to 15 years in prison.

Carly Simon - Jesse Lyrics

(Carly Simon/Mike Mainieri)
Oh mother, say a prayer for me
Jesse’s back in town, it won’t be easy
Don’t let him near me
Don’t let him touch me
Don’t let him please me

[Chorus:]
Jesse, I won’t cut fresh flowers for you
Jesse, I won’t make the wine cold for you
Jesse, I won’t change the sheets for you
I won’t put on cologne
I won’t sit by the phone for you

Annie, keep reminding me
That he cut out my heart like a paper doll
Sally, tell me once again
How he set me up just to see me fall

[Chorus]

Jesse, quick come here
I won’t tell a soul
Not even myself
Jesse, that you’ve come back to me
My friends will all say “She’s gone again’
But how can anyone know what you are to me
That I’m in heave again because you’ve come back to me - Oh Jessie!

Jesse, I’ll always cut fresh flowers for you
Jesse, I’ll always make the wine cold for you
Jesse, I can easily change my mind about you
And put on cologne
And sit by the phone for you

Jesse, let’s open the wine
And drink to the heart
Which has a will of it’s own
My friends, let’s comfort them
They’re feeling bad
They think I’ve sunk so low

Jesse, I’ll always cut fresh flowers for you
Jesse, I’ll always make the wine cold for you
Jesse, I will change the sheets for you
Put on cologne
And I will wait by the phone for you - Oh Jesse!

Man, I bet the young thief was pretty surprised that the older guy took him that quickly! Kudos to the marine.

Wow, that’s great!

Rae should consider himself lucky, too - he *could* of wound up like the thug in this story:

Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but why does the media consider anybody that has ever served in the armed forces a solider/sailor/airman/marine? My dad (who is now dead) was in the Army for a few years in the early 60s. I never considered him a “former soldier.” He was just a “guy.”

He didn't, but I did. You got anymore? I swear it's for a really worthy cause, just keep those fives coming.

I seem to recall a similar story about an old Ranger accosted in a convenience story by a robber who thought the old fellow would be easy prey. The Ranger killed him with his bare hands.

If I may....

You join the Army, you join the Air Force, you can even join the Navy.

But

you BECOME a United States Marine.

So, even after you are no longer on active duty, all of that “Marine Corps Stuff” is still running around inside your head. The PRIDE is a bonus.

As is often the case, the gentleman may have identified himself as a “Marine”. I hear it all the time.

I have noticed the same ‘side effect’ with RANGER and AIRBORNE types as well. Sometimes, and to lesser amount, you see it in FIGHTER pilots, SEALs, UDT, etc. Funny how that works.
