Note:
If you'd like to represent the left and right facing carets to illustrate HTML tags, it can be done easily by typing in the ampersand (Shift 7) then the pound (Shift 3) then the numerals 60 for the left one and 62 for the right one.
So to be able to show someone how to italicize without all the mucking around with spaces, just type in the ASCII codes:
<italicize? Not!>
