Does this mean the wedding is off? For sure?
lol
A friend at work, whose parents arranged his marriage back in India, called off the engagement when it came out that his proposed bride (and her family) had lied about her age. She was roughly a year older than claimed in the presentation papers.
The magnitude of the discrepancy was less of an issue than the loss of credibility, which he foresaw he would be incapable of getting past in future years, to the detriment of a future lifetime spent with her. Unlike the casual hooking up and serial polygamy which has become almost a norm in our culture, Indians expect to be married for life regardless of difficulties which emerge after the knot is tied. Thus, they are far more cautious about these things, and far more offended about “material misrepresentation” than those of us who may approach marriage with a more casual attitude, treating it more or less like a short-term lease, with “easy cancellation” terms available to either party to the transaction (unless children enter the picture).
Those who live in the society of the “easy hookup” and serial polygamy look a bit foolish themselves when they react to examples like this with amusement. In the end, the joke is on them, and it’s a quite unpleasant joke at that. In Europe, which has cultivated similar marriage customs (and abortion practices) for some decades, the ROP is winning the “battle in the bedroom” hands down. So far, it looks like the USA is only trailing Europe by a few decades, though the replacement population as the indigenous population dwindles is not (yet) dominated by adherents of the ROP.
