$200 Linux PC selling out is another reason Wal-Mart is good for America

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Here, it’s claimed that 10,000 units were sold. But as you read the article, towards the middle the writer mentions that he’s a huffpost contributor. I had to go back and read the headline again.

Not only sold out on its website, but nowhere to be found in its SF Bay Area stores either.

Yeah, though the belt itself is getting harder to find.

I have a feeling most of these are not selling to typical Wal-Mart customers....apparently these maybe good home theater type systems since they are low-power/low-heat.

I bought two similar units a year or so ago from Frys Electronics, for $179 each. They came with Linspire installed, which I used for a short while, then replaced with Mepis.

Dell is selling computers with Linux Ubuntu preinstalled. In fact the one I just bought was used to post this.

Nate, congrats. When I thought my power book crapped out a few weeks ago I was going to replace it with a dell/linux laptop but fortunately the folks at the apple store were nice enough to help me despite the fact I’m *way* out of warranty, worked out for them as last month I bough 10.5 and am loving it (whens the last time a new os ran noticeably faster than its predecessor on the exact same hardware right out of the box.

As a linux user you can easily answer the question yourself. :-)

Linux the kernel yes, most distros not really. Many of them have started to bloat (hence my qualifier of ‘out of the box’) Linux distros can when installed correctly (not really hard to do) improve performance in version over version but if you look at the system requirement for RHE3 vs RHEL5.1 you’ll see that required resources have increased, for a reason..

*shrug* Maybe it’s just me.

I’ve almost always noticed small increases, and in a handful there have been large differences. Suse 10.3 has a one disk install now, KDE/gnome only. It’s small and clean.

I’ve had a harder time now, telling the difference ever since I went with an SSD though...........

I don’t remember if I showed you that or not.

I'm glad to hear Apple is running counter to the trend ...
