Not mentioned in this brief story is that Wal-Mart will be selling Toshiba HD DVD players for $98.97!!! Pre-prints of the Wal-Mart ad for this coming Friday show not only below-$100 pricing on Toshiba HD DVD players, but also HD DVDs for $14 and change. This appears to be the opening salvo for mass adoption of HD DVD and the chill of well-deserved demise for Blu-Ray.

Is there any particular reason you like HD over Blu-Ray?

I've kept out of the format wars because I don't have an HD TV yet and I figured I'd just wait until the format was unified or players commonly played both formats.

OK, how much for the HDTV to go with it?

But Betamax Blu-Ray is superior technology. Betamax Blu-Ray will remain the standard for connoisseurs...

I would rather go elsewhere and pay 20 bucks more rather than go to Walmart and push my way through the crowds of oafs there.

People keep pushing the season earlier and earlier. There is a radio station in Kansas City that started it’s “All Christmas Music All The Time” yesterday and it’ll run through December 25th. Any predicitons on how many times they’ll be playing “Santa Baby” over that 57 day span?

I amat least five years out of date when it comes to technology. I’m assuming I can keep using my existing DVDs for quite a while.

Although I’m sure the studios are working hard to give me a reason to buy all my favorite movies YET AGAIN in some improved format.

I still use my VCR frequently!

:)

This is a smart move. If they can get people lining up every friday morning to enter their store, once you are in you are likely to buy more than just what you came for.

I wonder if there will be a big line tomorrow morning for these DVD players. I’d love to get one but I’m not getting up at 4AM to get in line for it.

I guess it matters how many people know about it, and how many each store will have. I’m guessing they aren’t making money on this, and they will have very few of the players. I just tried to call my local Walmart and they wouldn’t pick up the phone.

On another note, there were a bunch of mad Target shoppers today. I was doing post-holloween bargain shopping, and a lot of people were there to get costumes. The costumes were in the back of the store, the rest was in the front.

Well, the people who moved the stuff around never bothered to MOVE the back of the store stuff to the front. That’s OK, but another group responsible for putting up CHRISTMAS stuff got mad at the holloween stuff being there, so they threw it all in carts.

When too many people came back and “got in their way” picking through the carts, one of the workers took the carts and moved them into the warehouse area.

So half the merchandise that they were trying to unload was now inaccessible to those who came to purchase it.

On the news I heard they would offer a laptop for under $400. Now ‘THAT’ I might go for.

Reminds me of when I worked in the K-Mart’s electronics department back in high school. Everyday some schlep would waddle in and ask about my “cheapest” VCR. I would tell them that it was a Goldstar model that sold for $68.00 and that they shouldn’t buy it because it was crap. They bought it anyway and would be back in the store to return it the following week because it stopped working.
