Teaneck lab tech charged with having sex with corpse of 92 yr. old

TEANECK — A lab technician at Holy Name Hospital has been charged with having sex with the body of a 92-year-old woman in the hospital’s morgue, authorities said Monday. Anthony Merino, 24, of W. 185th Street in Manhattan, was arrested at the hospital on Sunday morning and was charged with desecrating human remains, a second-degree crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Bail for Merino was set at $400,000, with no 10-percent payment option. He was in custody in Teaneck on Monday.

Merino, who is employed full time at Overlook Hospital in Summit, was working a shift as a histology lab technician at Holy Name on Sunday, the first time he had worked there in several months, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Merino asked a security guard for access to a refrigerated area near the morgue where slides are stored, Molinelli said. The security guard complied, and wandered away for several minutes. “When he came back, he observed Mr. Merino violating the deceased victim,” Molinelli said. “He immediately notified Teaneck police.” A Holy Name spokeswoman, Jane Ellis, confirmed that the incident occurred, and said the matter is under investigation. She identified Merino only as a “newly hired, per-diem employee,” and said he had been “immediately terminated.” Merino has worked at Overlook only since Sept. 7, said Joan Lebow, a spokeswoman for Atlantic Health, which runs the hospital. She said he has been suspended as a result of the charges.

You could fill a thimble with what I know about necrophiliacs, but I am as much genuinely confused as I am disgusted. It's well established that once one starts going down a path of doing anything for an orgasm, the more bizarre and disgusting one's behavior becomes. But corpses?

In a lifetime of watching TV talk shows, I have only seen one standup comic end his set to a chorus of boos. That was in the eighties, when Emo Phillips closed his turn on Late Night with David Letterman (the NBC years) with this joke.
