Joe Girardi has agreed to a three-year contract to manage the New York Yankees.
The agreement to take over as Joe Torre's replacement is worth an average salary of at least US$2-million annually, a baseball official said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the deal.
Girardi was the 2006 NL Manager of the Year with Florida, plus he has a pinstriped pedigree. The hard-nosed catcher played on three Yankees teams that won the World Series, served as their bench coach and was a TV announcer this year.
"Joe Girardi is a good man," Torre said Monday on "Late Show with David Letterman." "He's got a feel for this organization."

Good, now take the K-rod money and invest in some pitching.
Oh thank God. Now I can get on with my life. /s
Why can't we go back to the 80s, where nobody gave a damn about what happenned to the Yankees in the off season except for their fans.
Maybe he can get Rocket Roger resigned to another 7 game $90 million dollar deal!!
Roger Clemens is the luckiest man in professional sports. He just pocketed the money, “showed up”, took it easy, and now will have en even more lucrative retirement.
“Joe Girardi has signed his soul to the devil, for a second time.”
Girardi hasn’t even had time to spit, and already the boo-birds are singing.
I was pulling for Donny Baseball, but realistically he hasn’t proven himself as much of a coach.
Wonderful news. If they had signed Mattingly, I would have switched allegiances to my first baseball love, the Dodgers (I didn’t leave them, they left me).
Along with the [Dodgers'] possible hire of Torre, it is being reported that his bench coach, Don Mattingly, may be joining him in the same role that he manned for one season with the Yankees after spending three seasons as their hitting coach.I take the minority position on Mattingly, formed completely as a result of the disgraceful strike that cost the 1994 Baseball Season. It was not, strictly speaking, Mattingly's active role in the strike that got me -- he was the Yankees players' rep that year -- it was because in every postgame lockerroom interview leading up to the strike, Mattingly never once mentioned the fans. Not freakin' once!!!
Good riddance.
Sounds good to me.
Do you think he will hang it up or will he be “coaxed” out of retiremnet with another ridiculous contract?
“Good, now take the K-rod money and invest in some pitching.”
You mean OnlyinMay Rod?
So now everyone can stop talking about the Yankees? Please?
I am so sick of ESPN:
Yankees, Colts, Buckeyes, Patriots, yankess, Red Sox, A-Rod, Yankess.
By the way, threads CAN be ignored.
Sorry for that STAR. Seriously. But on the plus side, I did ignore the first 50 threads on the Yanks.
This is just the right move for the Yankees. Girardi will be able to work with young players and re-build the Yankees into a team that is fun to watch. It is about time.
