I believe this is a Hollywood reworking of the CARTOON GI Joe (Which, while still an American Hero, the cartoon really was nothing like the original GI Joe action figure).

That G.I. Joe must always remain a United States Marine. That doesn't make sense. Even from the beginning, there was a Marine, a sailor, a soldier and a pilot version of G.I. Joe. It's never been just one character.
