Jury: Lisa Montgomery should be executed
Kansas City Star ^ | 10/26/07 | John Shultz

Posted on 10/26/2007 11:47:50 AM PDT by Huntress

Jurors unanimously agreed today that Lisa Montgomery be put to death for killing Bobbie Jo Stinnett and stealing her unborn daughter nearly three years ago.

The federal jury deliberated about five hours. If jurors had not reached a unanimous decision in favor of the death penalty, Montgomery would have received life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Before the decision was announced, the judge ordered spectators to control their emotions or leave the courtroom.

I’m unabashedly pro-life and pro-death penalty. There is no conflict there. There is no Biblical complication there.

Fry the evil broad. Sell it on PPV and give the proceeds to a worthy charity. Whatever.

Glad she ain’t my daughter because I might be forced to give a crap about her immortal soul.

At this point I’ll invoke Ron White.

In Texas, if you kill someone, we kill you right back.......

“Thou shalt not murder”. Thus saith the Lord.”

Murder:
The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.

That’s not what the death penalty is.

The victim is sure to be avenged

In my view, the problem is that when it comes to the death penalty or even imprisonment, in general, I am not interested in any of the following things:

- Deterrence (of others committing crime)

- Vengeance

- Rehabilitation (obviously does not apply to Death Penalty)

Trying for "deterrence" gives the criminal element undue credit for possessing reason and insight. Sure, a few will be affected by potential punishment, but most are not and go about the business of being a nasty element in society. Statistical evidence showing some sort of "lack of deterrence" being realized (especially if used to argue for more lenient punishments) is meant to be ignored.

Vengeance does indeed belong to G-d and really shouldn't be a component of the State's process. Something horrific happens to one of my loved ones, I want the perp to fry not to "get even" (because you cannot, ever, really get even), but as a punishment.

Rehabilitation is a nice concept, but not much of a reality for the defective in question. The people that I've known who succeed after spending some time locked up didn't do so because of some skill they learned in the joint. They succeeded because they took 100% responsibility for their previous actions and changed whatever habits landed them in hot water in the first place...on their own volition. The greatest education determined criminals receive from being locked up involves making more criminal contacts, devising better strategies, and fostering an anger that leads to an escalation in the types of crimes they commit.

The name of the game is punishment. Punishment courtesy of The State.

Granny who lost her hubby to a murdering mugger shouldn't be required to push any hypodermic plungers to ensure the state delivers an appropriate punishment.

The death penalty is is not murder, it is justice.

No one should take pleasure in it, nor should they weep for a person that decided to take the right of living from another.

In this case, it is justice.

In fact, criminals are deterred by swift and certain punishment. If not, gangs and the mob could not keep their psychopathic members in line. The problem is that the concept is a joke in the legal system. I can assure you that back in the western era when vigilantes began to act, the measures were taken to heart by the criminals.

Eternal vengence is God's. For the temporal, he deliberately chose to institute the death penalty as part of earthly governance born of human corruption and the inability to follow higher laws.

Many people do want revenge. You may not, but hot and violent impulses for revenge lurk in the hearts of many who have been cruelly wronged. In my method, this would be served in addition to simple, straightfoward punishment.

I am not interested in rehabilitation. As I said, if the family gives the thumbs-up - the perp goes to the slammer for a lifetime of hard labor - no parole - ever.

I'm all for punishment and I'm all for the state to do it's duty to protect the civilians for whom is is constituted to serve. I do feel uneasy about the ability of the state to codify who get killed and legally sactioned for killing it's own citizens. It would be much better for the wronged do this under state sanctioning.

Finally, Granny needn't do the deed herself. I would bet Granny has more than a few members of her family that would be willing to do the deed on behalf of their Granny in retribution for the killing of their Grandpa.

If you didn’t know it was Lisa Montgomery they were talking about, how many would assume it was an abortionist?

"Thou shalt not murder". Thus saith the Lord.

Good reference... now go read the rest of the Bible. Maybe then you'll stop quoting things out of context.

Good reference... now go read the rest of the Bible. Maybe then you'll stop quoting things out of context.

What do some insist on putting the Ten Commandments within some sort of extended context. There are pretty darned clear and succinct. There was no 6pt font when inscribing stuff in stone tablets, after all. Sure, G-d could have done it, but Moses probably needed the as-yet-uninvented bifocals.

There is no doubt that The Bible is rife with killing. It also features plenty of murder. They are treated differently throughout. The individual contexts surrounding those events do not betray the clear meanings of the Commandments.
