vanity post (McAfee)
I also (upon good advice) took on another freebie called Advanced Windows Care 2 --- also, so far so good.
AVG Free . . . been using it for three years now and have no problem. Used to subscribe to Norton and gave up; all they did was tell me what they couldn’t do to whatever they found. Then they’d tell me to download some scary looking document that would “hand walk me” thru the minefield to get rid of the trojan or virus. Of course, my screen never looked like the instructions they gave me.
So, I gave up, got AVG FREE (Free version) and have been virus free for over three years. Doesn’t cost a thing and has a good reputation.
I use the following to protect my system (all free):
AVG
Ewico anti-spyware
Spyblaster
SUPER AntiSpyware
Spyware Terminator
Spybot
Ad- Aware
I use ZoneAlarm as my firewall.
Of course, you could just buy a MAC and eliminate all this (soon as this Windows machine dies, I will follow my own advice).
Have been problem free for years using these products. Of course I run the runable products every other day, or so, just to keep myself in the safe zone.
I have free AVG 7.5 and free Avira and every once in awhile I run Trend Micros Housecall, which is run online. Then I use free ccleaner to clean out junk and I use Spybot S&D free, and AdAware free. I also have Zone Alarm free.
I have fixed my relatives computers so many times I lost count because of viruses. I have installed all or some of the above on their computers and set them to run automatically.
Remember, don’t buy the advanced programs, just get the free ones.

Another for Bit Defender.
BUMP!
I second this AVG
a mac

and get rid of the viruses
My daughter didn’t run the virus detector that I put on her laptop. When her laptop stopped running, she took it to a repair shop and they told her the hard drive was shot and it would be $400.00 to replace it.
I told her to bring it home, and I’d fix it (I didn’t know a thing about repairing a laptop). I found a site online that shows how to take a laptop apart and I did it.
However, it turned out that the problem with her hard drive was a virus that wasn’t being detected. Avira anti-virus caught it finally.
Now I had two hard drives, so I bought a contraption that cloned her new installed drive to her old one and they are now switchable.
AVG freeware
very easy and non-intrusive
McAfee and Norton slow you down
I use AVG paid version because I use Outlook mail and am on cable connection. Paid version provides PoP mail scanning. I also use SpyBlaster and the best program is Diskeeper (real-time defrag).
I agree. AVG is great and free.
bump
I’ve been using F-Prot for a number of years without a problem. http://www.f-prot.com/
Was clued in to Avast recently by a friend. It’s been working well for me.
AVG - small footprint, giant capability.
It corrupted existing applications. You can't even un-install it. They had to send a patch in order for their uninstall program to work.
It still left files scattered all over my hard drive. I used XP utility to get rid of them.
The registry was polluted with orphan links. Had to run Registry Clean to clean up that mess.
Finally, I had to hire a lawyer to get a refund.
Trend Micro should be investigated for unethical business practices. I've contacted several organizations to look into them as a scam organization.
+1 AVG
