I don’t blame him. Who’d want back into *that* cesspool?

OK, if he won’t do it, I will
now don’t missunderstand, it goes against my grain, but for $5M, I can buck up and take it for one year

Smart move. Who needs that headache of an owner. Torre’s too good for him if you ask me. If they let LaRussa go in St. Louis I hope they can get Joe under contract. They loved him when he was there before.

If Torre were to take the helm of the BoSox, I might begin to have some respect for them. As it is now, the Red Sox are team #2 on my list of teams I like to see loose, right behind the Yankees and just ahead of the Braves & Phillies (#3, tie).

For $5 Mil / year, I’d manage anywhere!

I really don't care about the Yankees, but I was hoping that Joe would let the Steinbrenners stew in it for a bit, and then tell them to go stuff it just before an announcement was made.

Just to see George turn purple.

Classy guy. Also the most overrated coach ever. Joe won the WS one year after the Yanks canned Buck Showalter. I think they would have won with Buck, because the reasons they won was Paul O’Neill, Jeter, and Rivera-Wetteland. Torre had nothing to do with it. When Torre coached St. Louis years ago, they were losers every single season. Tony LaRussa, although NOT a classy guy, took an 83-win Cardinals and won the Championship. Under LaRussa, a middling pitcher named Jeff Suppan looked like Bob Gibson against the Mets in the ‘06 NLCS. Tony is a jerk, to be sure. But he is ten times the coach Torre is.

After hearing the constant threats this year of "World Series, or you're fired...World Series, or you're fired," now switching to, "Well, we weren't really serious. We kinda like you. How about one more year, and maybe more...here's $5M," I can see why he left it.

I'd surely want no part of that.

Joe, has always conducted himself with CLASS. Very smart of him to leave like this and not fired. Credit also to the organization that treated him with some respect considering how people are disposed of in the majors.

I Like the Yankees, and I wish they just let everyone go and start anew.

Rod... what a dilemma this guys is... so good during the season but yet he dies in post season...

Smart move my Steinbrenner. IF he didn't want Joe back AND didn't want to incur the wrath of the fans the only thing to do was to make an offer Joe would refuse. This way he's off-the-hook [he did make an offer, not fire him] and Joe still walks away.

Good deal for both; [Yankees] Joe is out and [Joe] did not get fired.

Oh, please let that happen. If somone can explain to me why Jacoby Ellsbury is not starting tonight, I would be glad to listen. Coco Crisp and JD Drew have zero, count’em, Zero RBIs in the post-season. They are rally killers, plain and simple.

He’s got enough money. It’s all relative. That would be like asking you to manage a McDonalds for $5.00 an hour. It’s just not worth it.

Excuse the interruption, sports fans...but bidding on Rush’s eBay auction is now at over $500,000!

“Tony is a jerk, to be sure. But he is ten times the coach Torre is.”

Earl Weaver was once asked; “How many games a year do you win for a team?” His answer was: “None, but I will lose you 3 or 4”. Baseball managers as a group are overrated.

I think Weaver’s answer was obviously understated, but I also think that a good team will win, and a bad one won’t, no matter who is manager. Torre has won a World Series, a team can do it with him managing. This year’s Yankees team didn’t have enough pitching.

Yeah, but... but... JD Who is really, really good at getting singles with two outs and Choke-O up after him.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a card-carrying member of “the Nation” but enough is enough. When your underwear stinks, it’s time for a change.

“Torre’s too good for him if you ask me. If they let LaRussa go in St. Louis I hope they can get Joe under contract. They loved him when he was there before.”

And he loved St. Louis as well.

Mr. Torre is a quality person

Joe managed the Cardinals in the early 90’s when the brewery had lost interest in baseball. He got little support, and his stable of players and pitchers was abysmal.

The new ownership would provide much better resources at all levels. However, like any franchise in a mid-size city, the Cardinals are going to have to rely much more heavily on the less expensive, younger players that can be provided by their minor league system.

I am not sure at this point in his career, that Joe would consider that a good fit, after being provided with an unending supply of blue-ribbon, veteran talent in the Bronx.

That’s because the Pirates offered him $6 mill for one year... with him single handedly doubling their total payroll.
