Hi, 'Face! I figured out what happened with the business cards.

The corporate president has a program to cut expenditures on everything but production components X% every year. (That's why my R&D travel budget got cut this year; I'm no longer in R&D, and nobody's given me a budget.) We regularly get corporate- (or division-?) wide emails conveying the latest tip on how we can save money. Some make sense --don't travel if you can teleconference-- but somebody ought to channel some to Scott Adams for the Dilbert cartoon.

In any event, they turned our source of cards over to some really cheap mail-order outfit. LoM used to work in the printing business and she was horrified at the poor quality and poor presentation. Part of my new job is going to be big on presentation (building on the name I've made for myself in the industry), and I need better cards than that; if I were "just" a software engineer it wouldn't really matter.

It's not a big thing. Time & effort-wise, I've put more into learning a little Arabic for this trip than I've put into the cards. The first lesson taught the two most important phrases. I'm sure you can guess what they are:

- (Excuse me,) I don't understand Arabic.
- Do you understand English?

Several family members are still in the printing business, and I’ve become critical of print jobs without really meaning to.

Of course, several family members are also artists, and I’ve become critical of most art. I try to keep an open mind, but....

I’m sure you’ll do just fine. If Egypt is anything like Pak, English is all over the place, and taught in schools. You should be able to get a pizza from Pizza Hut, but you may get goat sausage instead of pork sausage!

Ohyah...I was in Wally World yesterday, and had to listen to Christmas music. the Hallowe’en stuff was rushed off the shelves to 75% off in a heartbeat, and Christmas stuff is all over the place.

I went into the grocery store and found two aisles blocked by Christmas products yet to be put on shelves. Gonna be a long seven weeks....
