Wish I could help. I am avoiding Vista like the plague...
I’m hoping for some pointers from FR’s resident Windows expert...
Find a hammer and then go visit Apple.com.
I’m running XP too. I got the update last night and have had no problem. Good luck.
If you have the original Operating system disks put in the initial installation disk, you might need to change your bootup sequence in the BIOS.
You might have inadvertantly downloaded a virus. Windows XP and Vista updates require software authentication and this couldn’t have happened throught the legit Windows Updater utility. If it did, the newspapers would have been screaming about it right now since millions of computers run update daily all over the world.
Oh boy. There’s a fix but not easy as its likely beyond your experience level (no offense). So in your case I'd call 'The Geek Squad'. They come out and fix computer issues in your home.
btw, I'n Running Windows XP Pro - BUT - have Vista loaded on my HD which I can use as the OS in the future when Vista becomes 'safer'. I worry about the same thing you're going through. That the auto update 'sees' Vista on my HD and updates that then my XP Pro is 'gone'.
Good luck.
I also think this must have been a virus. I have run XP pro on all three of my home systems and two of our work computers. I have automatic update turned on and have received “no” Vista updates.
Question!
Do you have another computer at home running XP?
If so I am willing to help you (through email) try to save your data. If you have another computer and would like my help please private message me. I have worked as a PC tech since 1996 and have had to fight these problems before.
Give it to a charitable organization for the tax write-off and buy a Mac. I’m still running a Dell with XP, but when it comes time for a new machine I’m going Apple. I want nothing to do with Vista.

Anyone? Do you happen to know how I can re-set my line width? I use firefox. Thanks.
OK, FR GEEK HELP . . .
Have had it with my 5 year old custom built ASUS AMD DUAL CPU system. The 2nd 1 gig memory slot has never worked.
too many exasperating frustrations due largely to Microslop software and abuse of customers . . . but upgrading the old hardware would help.
HAVE PONDERED going with Macs and Linux and dual Linux/Microslop
Partly for $$$ reasons . . . have hit upon replacing the mother board.
The tower case is hefty—a good one. The power supply is super hefty. The DVD’s and HD’s and supplemental cards are all fairly recent models.
Have a bit of a bias toward ASUS AND AMD
Am expecting to pay around $750-$1,000 for motherboard replacement/upgrade.
Was stumped a bit on the 32 bit vs 64 bit but just makes no sense to do less than 64 bit.
I ASSUME, SADLY, THAT MEANS I’D HAVE TO REPLACE XP WITH 64 BIT XP? OR THE NEW SYSTEM . . . FORGET WHAT IT’S CALLED—from Microslop?
Would that mean virtually all my other software etc. programs would have to be replaced? UGH.
STAYING with Microslop has the key priority of still being able to interface with the Microslop stuff I need to interface with at the college.
WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS OH GREAT MYSTERIOUS ALL KNOWING GEEKS ON SUCH ISSUES???
THANKS IN ADVANCE.
