What TV Do I Buy?

My 6 year old Sony just died. I am looking for a tv that does not have a picture tube.

Does anyone recommend one? Does anyone know about LCD or Plasma?

Need some help.

Granted, most people who buy a TV probably won’t have major issues, or any at all (I have a Sony CRT I bought in ‘95 I think that’s still going strong, despite 4 moves in that time). Just with the number of people I noticed with this issue, I thought it worth mentioning. And by no means is 56” small. =)

Sony makes a nice universal remote available at Best Buy.

Wait a few month (2-3). By then after poor Christmas sales, you can steal a Hispanics ID, and get a sub-prime loan to finance your 50" plasma. As long as you don't use your real address for the purchase, you'll be fine.....the government will bail out the lender for your TV with no problems and the store's bottom line, as well as the manufacturer's bottom line, and China's bottom line will look much better. Then the 'glovermint' will drop the interest rates again and raise all of our taxes.

Get an LCD if you can view the TV in a darkened room....they have less problems than plasma's at this time.

I usually do the honey-do projects. I sometimes suspect he does this on purpose; so I will have to fix it.

Then I remember the time he was excited buying a kitchen faucet at a discount from a friend’s store. It was really pretty and we did need it. However, after 2 hours of fighting with it and me telling him to call a plumber and his split finger; he did. Took the plumber 15 minutes.

Don’t believe what you read here about plasma burnout or limited display life. I can promise you that any plasma you buy will last at least twice as long as the Sony you just buried.

Go to www.avsforum.com and prepare to do a lot of reading.

Plasma are stil the best choice in larger formats, 50”+.

I believe the overall picture is better than LCDs, the colors are richer and the picture is good anywhere in the room.

My ex-husband being the middle of 3 boys told me that’s how his two brothers got out of work demanded of the parents, and he ended up doing work. The two brothers would deliberately do a bad job on anything their parents assigned them. My ex would do a good job, and therefore got the work assigned to him.

I think we watched that TV WELL into the 1960's, before we got one that had an oval screen, instead of a circle!

Back then, there were actually shows you could watch as a kid.

LCD has fewer downsides than other current technologies, IMHO.

That would be DLP.

My impression of LCD panels is that if you get more than a few degrees off-center, the picture starts to wash out. This happens with DLP too, but at a much steeper angle. Plasma looks pretty good from virtually any angle you can see the thing.

Whatever you do make sure you purchase the extended warranty. I don’t usually like these because they cost so much, but with the new TV’s it’s a must. Could be very expensive to fix and things don’t last like they used to.
If you want to mount on the wall your bracket can be expensive to both purchase and have installed unless you do it yourself. We just got a Samsung 52” LCD after much research.

Look at any of the newer Sony/Samsung/Sharp LCDs - super bright and virtually no wash out at all (admittedly, this may not be true of the El Cheapo Wal-Mart Special Westinghouse and Olevia models). On the other hand, even the huge and expensive Sony 70" DLP gets darker and dimmer if your aren't dead center in front of it. Plasma is a huge power hog and subject to burn-in issues. Even from a distance you can see millions of little dots, which I find distracting. Besides, plasma is yesterday's technology. LCD is the best of the lot until the newer technologies like OLED start arriving in stores.
