My 6 year old Sony just died. I am looking for a tv that does not have a picture tube.
Does anyone recommend one? Does anyone know about LCD or Plasma?
Need some help.
Thanks.
Just wait for Hillary’s Plasma TV plan....
Don’t buy one. Get a nice stereo instead. :o)
I got a 42” HDTV plasma cheapie from Walmart. Very happy with it for a year now. Everyone remarks what a nice picture it has.
I got rid of our last one in March of 1995 and it was a good move. You can watch movies and DVDs of many TV series on your monitor.
Don’t. You’ll be better off without one.
But I also have a new(ish) Sony LCD 27" that gets the job done. ...so far.
I just bought a 42” Sanyo LCD. ChinaMart has them for under $1000. It works great!
Be sure you get HD in a flat screen. LCD or plasma depends on the size of the screen....anything up to 42” is normally LCD, the bigger ones are plasma.
Warning: cable looks like crap on an HD TV (unless you subscribe to HD cable...it’s a little more) because the resolution is so good it shows how crappy the normal cable feed really is. I was very disappointed with my new 40” until I went with Dish network. Now I have a great picture.
I too am looking to buy a NEW age provider of the public air waves. Las Vegas Dave is a great resource for we that are not of new age television buying intellect.
The best current bang for the buck are the Vizio LCDs sold at Sam’s Club and Walmart, and the price/value break point is at the 32” - 37” sizes.
The choice between LCD and Plasma will first depend on how large a screen you want.
LCD can only be so large (I don’t know the current limits—it used to be about 20 inches).
I like the DLP. They are less expensive and have good picture quality.
I like Toshiba TVs as I have a 32 inch one in the bedroom.. It weighs a ton, is over 10 years old with no sign of dying. (it also has dual tuners so can to picture in a picture by itself).. But one day the CRT will die.
I have a 7 year old Sony projection (53 inch), but it will do 1080i.. It has a good picture, but if one of the lamps blows, it’s done for. I give it 2 more years tops.
But I am sure there are other good names.. All the different technologies have their trade offs. So you have to figure out what looks good for you.
I love you pissant.
The backlight on LCDs ages and eventually burn out if it's florescent. If it's LED-backlit (newer technology) that's not a problem.
LCD's don't give you true blacks only dark grey although it's getting better. Plasmas have true black.
Plasmas are best watched in dark rooms because glare is an issue for glossy screens.
LCD's are generally less expensive, but good plasmas are now quite reasonably priced.
Get a 30” gateway 1080p lcd computer monitor and a tv tuner. It’s cheaper than a ‘tv’.
I bought a 56” DLP set two years ago and am very pleased ... much more bang for the buck than LCD or Plasma, but not as sexy.
