Stanford's Harbaugh still believes USC one of best teams ever (41 PT. UNDERDOG BEATS #2 USC @ HOME)

Here's the game preview from ESPN.com:

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh is sticking to his preseason assessment that No. 2 Southern California might just be the greatest college football team ever.

"There is no question in my mind that USC is the best team in the country and may be the best team in the history of college football," Harbaugh said this week. "As a sort of college football historian, there's no question that this SC team ranks right up there."

Chances are good that his opinion won't change Saturday, when the struggling Cardinal (1-3, 0-3 Pac-10) meet the Trojans (4-0, 2-0) at Los Angeles Coliseum, where USC hasn't lost since a 21-16 defeat by Stanford in 2001.

That's a string of 35 consecutive victories by the Trojans in Los Angeles, and they're favored by 41 points over the Cardinal.

If things weren't bleak enough for injury-riddled Stanford, which has won just two of its last 18 games, the Cardinal will have a new quarterback -- Tavita Pritchard, who has thrown only three college passes.

T.C. Ostrander had a seizure and was hospitalized last Sunday and, although test results were normal and he was released the same day, he will not play against USC.

The Trojans, meanwhile, may play with more fire than usual, since they barely held on for a 27-24 victory over underdog Washington last weekend and dropped to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 behind LSU.

Some of Harbaugh's comments have left USC coach Pete Carroll shaking his head, including the first-year Stanford coach's remarks at the preseason Pac-10 media day. Carroll responded then by saying, "You've gotta love Jim, huh? I'm glad he thinks that. There's no way I would have any way of understanding what that's all about."

Even before that, Harbaugh had predicted that Carroll would be headed back to the NFL after this season...

“USC a joke”.....? huh? Only one of the best programs in the country and the best team over the past 5 years regardless of wins and losses... all teams eventually lose..... nice observation blindman.

This is why I propose doing for the college football bowls like what they do for the college basketball during March, have a bracket setup.

If LSU loses to FLA, then does anyone deserve to be No. 1?

The way this season is going, I'm waiting for Slippery Rock to start climbing up the polls.

“It’s a child’s game.
High-school, college and pro.
Please grow up.
They’re throwing a ball around a field for God’s sake.”

If you plan on unilaterally bashing sports you should be more specific and focused in your argument. I would be happy to illustrate the many positive benefits to sports such as confidence building, teamwork, or simply relaxation. I’m curious what you enjoy in your off hours and how beneficial that is to the world. For starters being on a forum such as this has many positive aspects such as education or activism but I suspect for most it’s a hobby and one they spend too much time on, myself included. Sitting here arguing with you is less beneficial to me, my family, and you and yours than watching a world cup soccer game with my girls. You should consider growing up and broadening your horizons and you could start by spending less time on line.

They're throwing a ball around a field for God's sake.

Cut from a team when you were 10, hmm? Never went out for anything again? Never enjoyed a few beers and a pick up softball game on a spring Saturday? Touch frisbee football game at the family reunion?

Never quite caught the clue as to how GOOD some one has to be to play at the major college or pro level? Never really understood that 90% of men that have measurable amounts of testosterone would have paid a large price to have suited up and played just once for their college team? Not really into fun of any form or understanding that inside every 40 yo man is a 14 year old boy yelling, "WTF happened?", are you?

You have my pity, dude.

“But I’m always a fan of the team playing USC!”

The Trojan haters, of which there are many, are sure eating this up.

Don’t worry — the Trojans will come back so that you can hate them again.

Any team in any major sport that's achieved an enormous amount of success either historically or in the very recent past - Trojans in football, Yankees in baseball, Lakers in basketball, etc. - is going to be widely and roundly hated by many. Envy goes with territory. Same reason the U.S. is hated worldwide -- our extreme success.

Yep, the Trojans will be back.

“I’m sorry, but USC is a joke, as is Stanford. Actually, on second thought, the entire PAC-10 is a joke.”

Considering the fact that USC and, in general, PAC-10 teams have usually kicked the SEC teams’ butts, I’m guessing you’re an SEC fan.

I don't "hate." I just root against. And I won't stop just because they've lost.

So does "front-running," always joining with the fan base of the hottest team. No better proof of that than Hillary, who was a Cub fan (99 years without a World Championship) before she decided to run for the Senate in New York. Then, all of a sudden, she revealed she was "always a Yankees fan."

Indeed. In fact, in the 2000 World Series (in the midst of her Senate campaign) she sported a double-billed cap — one side with Mets’ logo/colors and the other side Yankees’. ...and longtime Yankee fan Rudy G. blasting her for taking both sides. As one would expect fans of both teams took exception to her pandering, but evidently not enough to keep her out of office.

Oh — before you suggest that Hillary only chose the Yankees because of the geographical factor, remember she had two teams to choose from; the Yankees and the Mets. If the Mets had been up and the Yankees down — as was the case in 1984-1990 — she would have said she had a crush on Tom Seaver.

As a Trojan fan myself, the Trojan offense in the game Saturday reminded me of the oft repeated quote from the past USC coach John McKay when his team lost:

When asked, “What do you think of the offense’s execution?” he replied, “I’m all for it.”

Is Jim available to QB the Bears anytime soon, if this Greise thing doesn’t pan out?

One of the great all time sports quotes. That was when he was the first head coach of the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one of the worst teams in the history of the NFL.
