Here's the game preview from ESPN.com:
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh is sticking to his preseason assessment that No. 2 Southern California might just be the greatest college football team ever."There is no question in my mind that USC is the best team in the country and may be the best team in the history of college football," Harbaugh said this week. "As a sort of college football historian, there's no question that this SC team ranks right up there."
Chances are good that his opinion won't change Saturday, when the struggling Cardinal (1-3, 0-3 Pac-10) meet the Trojans (4-0, 2-0) at Los Angeles Coliseum, where USC hasn't lost since a 21-16 defeat by Stanford in 2001.
That's a string of 35 consecutive victories by the Trojans in Los Angeles, and they're favored by 41 points over the Cardinal.
If things weren't bleak enough for injury-riddled Stanford, which has won just two of its last 18 games, the Cardinal will have a new quarterback -- Tavita Pritchard, who has thrown only three college passes.
T.C. Ostrander had a seizure and was hospitalized last Sunday and, although test results were normal and he was released the same day, he will not play against USC.
The Trojans, meanwhile, may play with more fire than usual, since they barely held on for a 27-24 victory over underdog Washington last weekend and dropped to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 behind LSU.
Some of Harbaugh's comments have left USC coach Pete Carroll shaking his head, including the first-year Stanford coach's remarks at the preseason Pac-10 media day. Carroll responded then by saying, "You've gotta love Jim, huh? I'm glad he thinks that. There's no way I would have any way of understanding what that's all about."
Even before that, Harbaugh had predicted that Carroll would be headed back to the NFL after this season...
This is the ONLY good thing that happened today. Miami loses (though at least they didnt quit), Delaware loses, Ohio State is rolling, ND looks like theyll break into the win column, heck even Florida looks like theyll win. Think Ill drink myself to sleep tonight...
If the Teddy Bears lose to 0-5 Notre Dame, can they just fire Karl Dullard (Dorrell) on the spot? 6 points against an 0-5 team?
I miss Rodney Peete. Fight On.
Boise State was the only undefeated team in the nation last year, but were denied a crack at the national title because a Big West team supposedly couldn't beat a Big Eleven team (No, I won't call them "Big Ten" because I can freakin' count) or an SEC team. Well, BSU beat Oklahoma, the Big 12 champs, and the highest-ranking team put in their path. Still, the machines and the corrupt, stupid polls of coaches, former players, and sportswriters said, "Congratulations! You're the only undefeated team in the nation. That makes you...the fourth runner-up. Thanks for playing!"
It was like a holiday to me when Michigan lost to Appalachian State. The ridiculously ballyhooed Notre Dame is total crap this year. West Virginia, Penn State, Louisville, Florida, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Texas, Tennessee -- all the schools making plans for New Years Day and beyond are taking a back seat even though the deck is stacked in their favor before the first kickoff of the year. I don't even care if my Cal Bears, who will be either #1 or #2 come tomorrow, gets upset as well if it helps bring the maddog BCS down like the house of cards it is.
I agree. I will be shocked if Cal is #1 in BOTH polls.
As an IU grad, I can only conclude that hell HAS frozen over.
Not so Quick... LSU is on the Florida 5 with 2 min left. Florida 24 LSU 21. Lsu is 5-5 on 4th down, including 2 on this drive.
Harbaugh would love say that his squad beat "maybe the best team in the history of college football," but if he really believes that nonsense he's got a few screws loose. The current Trojans are certainly better than my Bruins (but then again who isn't?), but all-time great teams don't lose to the Stanfords of the world. Nor do they lose to the Bruins on the final day of the season last year, for that matter.
Congrats to the Cardinal. Enjoy it.
I think it dismisses any notion of the global warming theory, don’t you think?
Title is misleading, as this interview was conducted BEFORE tonight’s game.
LSU now leads by four, less than a minute in the game.
I hurriedly posted the only article on the game I could find on ESPN.com, which was the preview. I originally titled the thread “STANFORD (41 POINT UNDERDOG) BEATS #1 USC” but the Admin mod first corrected the ranking, and then retitled the thread after the preview article.
LSU wins. USC loses a conference game to Stanford, first home loss in 6 years, Teddy Bears lose to 0-5 Notre Dame. (Has Dorrell been fired yet?)
I just mean to point out that the readers see this thread after the game and deserve a reminder that the words were spoken before the game.
My apologies for being abrupt and unclear.
Fortunately, LSU held serve. Heaven knows we can’t have Berkeley or The Over-rated state university as #1.
LSU will probably be #1 in BCS. Ohio State is #2. California didn’t play, so they probably will be #3. USC is at most #4.
Florida blew it.
Fuhgettaboutit.
