I would say VT would be safe and sound. Heck, Canada isn't even surrounded by the US and they're pretty safe and sound due to the US military. VT would probably do just fine without federal monies, I wouldn't mind raised state taxes if I got the 33% the feds take from me every year.

I say let go and let them pay for their own defense and any US goverment facilities are there they will have to compensate the US government for.

Oh no, you won't let them get off that easily. They also walk away with 2% of the federal deficit (1 of 50 states) and 2% of the unfunded liabilities inside the Treasury.
