MIDDLEBURG, FL -- Two pit bulls killed their owner in Middleburg Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at a home on Cosmos Road, which is south east of County Road 218 and Hibiscus Avenue.

The victim is identified as 42-year-old Tina Marie Canterbury. The dogs turned on her when she took out the trash this morning.

Authorites say the dogs also bit the woman's grown son in his neck. He's been treated at the scene for his injuries.

A family friend rushed over and shot one of the dogs. Both dogs ran away.

Deputies trapped one of the dogs right away and killed it. The second dog ran loose in the neighborhood for at least an hour before deputies caught it and killed it.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says two red bone pit bulls were involved.

Authorities say the dogs have never attacked people before.

48 of Vick's dogs could be saved, behavioral testing shows

All but one of the 49 dogs still in custody after the prosecution of Michael Vick on a dogfighting charge have the potential for placement, the office of U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg announced Monday.

A team of certified animal behavior experts evaluated the dogs and deemed only one an immediate candidate for euthanasia, according to a document filed in U.S. District Court in Richmond . That dog has a history of biting people and showed “intense aggression to humans to the point where the evaluation could not safely be completed,” the document said.

Of course not. I've learned from certain freepers how sweet and friendly the breed is.

Yes, I heard that as well and am cautiously hopeful. I’m sure they will be very responsible with placement but given their breeding, and God knows what history, it’s a bit risky. These dogs are NOT very everyone, in fact, not for most people.

At least the dog didn’t kill an innocent.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the true owner of these dogs was the woman's adult son mentioned in the article.

Hmm. I’ve heard of “redbone” and I’ve heard of “pit bull” but the two aren’t equivalent in any context I’m aware of.

“Redbone” is a coon hound that can often be trained to run foxes or deer. “Pit bull” isn’t a coon hound and doesn’t run coons or foxes or deer.

“Redbone” is a hunter/runner/tracker. “Pit bull” (ones I’m aware of) are NOT. They’re “working dogs” but they fight.

I’m sure this must be some sort of Ebonics mistranslation or something.

“A family friend rushed over and shot one of the dogs.”

I’m told that the only purpose of a gun is to kill people.

They weren’t “bad” dogs. These dogs attack for no reason at all. It’s just the way they are.

Have you ever seen statistics on the number of pit bulls in America vs. the number of maulings? Have you contrasted this to the number of crimes committed by various races and socioeconomic groups? Not making a point here, just curious.

Maybe you can explain why this video does not feature a pit bull.

I also notice that they did not print the name of the owner, even though they obviously knew since they knew that the dogs had never bitten before. As is usually the case, the owner will not likely be charged with anything more serious than allowing his dog to run free, which is probably a fine.

And if he is charged with something more, he’ll be acquitted.

Actually, now I see that the owner is the dead person. Got the death penalty.

I really wish I had the time it would take to socialize and train one or two right now. I don't right now and I've got two geriatric dogs-- not in the best of health. It simply wouldn't work.

Tell you what though, I'd like to see them all sent to Caesar!

This is Florida. We handle things a touch different here.

You will read quite a few pit bull bite stories here. They often end with the words, “a neighbor came to the victims’ rescue and shot the dog”.

Since the owner was killed, does this qualify for a Darwin Award nomination?

Well, I will tell you that my house insurance was cancelled because I had a German Shepherd. So they must be biting somebody.
