No, no! It’s TangleWOOD. Tanglewilde is farther out, a lot smaller homes and has changed over from nice to not-so-nice.
You’re sure his office will be right downtown? Do you have a building name or something that tells us which part of downtown? If it’s more towards the south quadrant, you really might like West University or Southside Place.
There is also a nice little area called Afton Oaks near Greenway Plaza, but also near River Oaks, generally. It’s just east of the Galleria area. The main east-west street through the city is Westheimer - many of the areas we’re talking about are just off of that. Also San Felipe to the north and Richmond to the south.
The area near Memorial Park is north of that and some of the older area is called Camp Logan, from an army camp that used to be there many years ago.
The business commuter routes seem to have a different “class” of riders, from what I’ve heard.
Being a loser (but not a crackhead), I had to ride the bus for two years and finally gave up a year ago when some MX men tried to corner me and I couldn’t run, or even walk, or fight because of my asthma.
I won’t say “never again,” because I may need to ride when I can’t afford the monthly cab ride to my PO Box and bank anymore ($50 to go 10 miles RT! My food money for 10 days!), but I wouldn’t recommend it to *anyone.*
One thing to consider is the gas prices are lower in Houston. Right now the highway gas station in the Woodlands has Unleaded for $2.59.
Not true at all. I am in the Briar forest/ West Belt area in West Houston and there are two temporary Section 8 apartments with Katrina "victims." The Government has them all paid up until March of 2009. They ain't going anywhere. And there are more section 8s with Katrina "victims" all over Houston. The liberals have them medicated for the time being on heavy doses of narcotic welfare.
From reading these requests for an area to live I would say that the Heights is probably the place to look first.

If you have a Houston map Check out the area north of Memorial Drive between Shepard Dr and Memorial Park. There is a variety of housing types there, little old cottages, huge new mansions and new townhouses. The commute to down town will be quicker than the time needed to park your car. My friend rents a small house on N. Terrace Dr. and I am sure there are others. If time to downtown is the issue this would be a great place to look.
My commute is about 45 min from Woodlands/Conroe area.
IMO, actually better than I-95 at 8 am.
You’ve got to be careful when looking in the Heights. Some great streets and some crappy streets.
Within reason commute time should not be the best criteria for buying a home. I live ten miles from work and do not work downtown. It takes thirty minutes or more each way. That is just the way it is. If a light is flashing or out completely add twenty to thirty minutes.
Getting into downtown early is not a problem and typically one could leave early to get home and miss the traffic.
As to safety get some training, buy a gun and then get a CHL. Stay on yellow alert and you will be fine.
To get some perspective spend a week in Mo-Town or Baltimore and Houston is a cake walk.

If you decide to live near Eaker, you should look for a house with a metal roof and windows capable of withstanding 5 psi overpressure.
I-10 is just about completed and moves traffic better than any of the other corridores. In Cinco you have a commute choice of I-10 or Westpark Tollway....
I can’t offer any real good first hand info but I travel through Houston a lot and commuting would be a bitch as far as I’m concerned. But the locals responding may have some good locations with easier commutes.
Since you have children in Austin - Dallas area then the Northwest section maybe an option.... Out 290 and between that and I-45. This may not offer a good commute situation though.

I definitely agree with Ditter. There are a lot of nice townhomes just east of Memorial Park, north of Memorial Drive, west of Shepherd. Memorial Drive has no traffic on it and makes a very nice 5-10 minute commute to downtown.
I don’t know who these people are telling you to live in Sugar Land, Clear Lake, or the Woodlands. These are all far away suburbs which would have an hour+ commute each way.
Katrina refugees headed south or west. Areas south, near Hobby airport, or west around Westheimer and Beltway 8 have a lot.
Otherwise, you might want to go NW. If you teach HS, you will want out of HISD--North or Northwest--or Friendswood is nice to the South--towards Galveston.
