Can anyone recommend good neighborhoods in Houston Texas that are not a nightmare commute to downtown?
Where is Clear Lake? Isn’t it northeast?

It IS God’s country. And there’s nothing like living somewhere else to remind you of that!

After you've lived in Houston...you'll love it.
I'd rent first. Close to downtown Houston. If you are determined NOT to rent first then look in the River Oaks area. Not right in River Oaks way too expensive but there are neighborhoods around River Oaks that would be a very easy commute. It's west from downtown. You could buy in a High Rise...there are several nice ones in that area and downtown Houston. I've got NO idea how expensive a high rise would be. You DO NOT won't to look in Montrose...full of homos. Any other areas close to downtown are dangerous. The Heights is also an area...north of I-10 close to downtown. Not as safe as River Oaks...you might want to get info from HPD of crime stats in those areas.
Southeast and South have been terrible places to live for many many yrs. That's nothing new. North Houston close to downtown is full of illegals. Lot's of crime there. But it's been bad there for a very long time.
You could look in West U...southwest but it's not that easy of a commute.
Thanks for the ideas. Can’t live in a high rise or apt. and probably can’t rent as we have large dogs.

That’s nice to know, about the K refugees. I was worried about that. I never felt safe in Houston before, but honestly, I never felt all that safe in downtown Dallas either, not by myself, and certainly not at night. I got lost there one time going to the convention center for a dog show. Here I was with my mini van full of dogs, driving around with all of the people who come out at night (lots of street people who looked unsavory) and I was afraid to stop to ask directions. Finally, I stopped the van and quickly crawled into the back to get the directions. I had been following someone and they were driving 90 mph and lost me. I finally found my way, but it was WAY scarey for this country girl!

Losers and crackheads ride the buses, yo.
Air conditioning for the homeless at two tokens a day.
Also look at the neighborhoods off of Memorial...the neighborhoods close to Memorial Park. Not in Memorial but in the Memorial Park area...which is close to River Oaks but not as close. An easy commute ‘cause you do not have to get on Freeways to get downtown.
Glad you told me that because for some reason I thought Memorial Park was bad.
Out of curiousity where is the Galleria?

Those areas I’ve pointed out to you are all great neighborhoods...the Heights will be more mixed so be careful where you would choose your home. But it has come back and on many streets is very nice.
Memorial is a great area...the Memorial area I indicated to you is much closer to downtown...the other Memorial area is very expensive and not an easy commute.
I just wondered about the Galleria because my BIL used to live there. I didn’t recall where it was, but I assumed it wasn’t close to downtown.

It may have been once an easy commute...but it’s gotten way to congested.
It’s called Tanglewilde that’s where Elder Bush lives. [Close to the Galleria] You could look there also...but it’s a more difficult commute, but it’s a nice area.
No, it's southeast (toward the coast). Here's a map for perspective.
A friend of mine used to commute (Park & Ride) from Clear Lake and got fed up with it. She sold her place and moved to an apartment on Allen Parkway just outside of downtown and is happy with her decision.
Ping to Bacon Man and Hap, who live in Katy and can tell you its benefits, although neither of them goes downtown.
But they live very close to where the Westpark Tollway ends, and that would (I think) make a downtown commute almost bearable.
Thank you Xena. I would love to live out, but not at the expense of my husband having hours of commuting every day.

The good thing is we are selling in S. FL which while the prices have come down are still higher than when we bought and higher than similar houses in Houston (except for some areas of course).
I think the Woodlands area is further than we want to be. The cost of gasoline is a factor, so even if you have a smooth trip, it’s about 30 miles each way.
