KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- On the next-to-last day of the regular season, the Cleveland Indians absorbed a postseason setback.
Joey Gathright singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth, lifting the Kansas City Royals over Cleveland 4-3 Saturday night and ending the Indians' hope of getting home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs.
The Indians already had clinched the AL Central title and were set to play the New York Yankees in the first round.
Cleveland's loss gave AL East champion Boston the home field. The Red Sox were to pick later Saturday night whether they wanted to open against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday or Thursday.
If the Indians start Wednesday, it would have enabled 19-game winners C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona to get two starts each in the five-game series against the Yankees.
Cleveland and Boston went into the final two games tied with 95-65 records. But the Red Sox, who own the tiebreaker over the Indians, beat Minnesota 6-4 earlier Saturday for their 96th win. ...
The road to the World Series goes through Fenway Park...
Yay! Go Sox!
And let's not forget Teddy Kennedy's two favorite sluggers...Mike McGuire and Sammy Sooser!

It’s interesting to note that key players on this Red Sox team came from the 2003 Florida Marlins. Coincidentally, that team killed the Yankees in the World Series.
You’re welcome.
John W. Henry owned the Marlins from 1999 to 2002. He knew those former Marlins players from personal experience and his contacts with Marlins FO staff.
Also interesting is the fact the Marlins priority was cutting payroll ..... not winning. I can understand your bitterness.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Sox-Angels games are put in prime time.
Perhaps Drew will be the opposite of A-Rod...lousy regular season but a great post season.
There’s no doubt Cleveland has the edge in starting pitching in that series.
When the Sox acquired Lowell (which was considered just a way to facilitate the Beckett deal by taking his contract off the Marlins’ books) all the scouting reports stated that he had no more bat speed left. Looks like he found some.
Not a problem.
I’m here ....................troll that I am.
Don’t forget to include me in the playoff thread please..............
:)
It will go up tomorrow morning. Needed to get straight who was going to play who....
There could be a 4-way tie tonight in the NL. You might be waiting until Wednesday night.
I hadn’t heard of any special play off games that they would have to run for ties. I would have expected that they would have enough things in place to decide the outcome.
