Just weeks ahead of its public launch, Apple Inc. has updated the minimum system requirements for its next-generation Leopard operating system to exclude 800MHz PowerPC-based Macs, AppleInsider has learned.
The Cupertino-based company has yet to officially announce the hardware requirements to run Leopard, due out in October, but had long stated in developer documentation that the software would require "an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (800MHz or faster) or G5 processor."

Read it more closely. What it says is that they'd been saying that it would run with the 800s, but now they see that it's too slow and they're going to cut it off at the 867s.

Support for those systems was subsequently pulled from the most recent pre-release copies of Leopard, which inform testers that the software "cannot be installed" on those computers.
Instead, Leopard will now require Macs with "an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor."
I have no intention of getting rid of it though :-)

Why anyone would expect a NEW 64 bit OS to run on OLD 32 bit machines is beyond me.
My experience with iPhoto 6.0.4 on a PB 12” 867MHz, 640MB RAM is quite alright. Not as fast as on one of the newer desktops that we have, but still quite fine. In regards to speed differences between the newer version and the older versions, I can’t say I’ve noticed much.
But it does...just only those faster than 800MHz, right?

Mine is a 17” imac with an 800 MHz G4, I can’t remember what year I got it. But it is still my favorite, even over my new HP laptop. Except for the built-in video conferencing camera. That is pretty cool.
Pretty respectable, considering that was the main problem that model was known for in the long run. Ours is an Indigo, and at the time I was sooo annoyed I had missed out on the fruit flavor iMacs, but this one’s a trooper.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Macs last. If they don’t obsolete them at some point, the potential exists to have 10+ year old machines still in common use in the near-future.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
They do, no doubt about that.
Linux has this strength as well; potentially even longer because you don’t have to worry about your computer being obsoleted. 5 years from now I’ll still be getting upgrades for my current computer.

No doubt. Apple is a business. And a bossy one at that, they like to have control over all aspects. I suspect that they did a near complete optimization for 64bit systems knowing that they didn’t want to support older systems anymore.
800mhz isn’t slow by any means, which will mean that a whole bunch of these macs are potential linux candidates.
I also suspect that the next macos will either cut out all G4’s or PPC entirely.
But as to bloat or not, I’ve used the recent macos’s, and they’re very ram heavy.
Considering that this is tucked into the /rumor folder, I wouldn’t get so excited over it.
It isn’t like this is al reuters reporting that kyoto is/not bush’s fault; something which is historical and not up for debate.

What can I say, I’ve been spoiled by linux. :-)
All kidding aside, the main thing I’m talking about is the processor, which if they’re supporting G4’s, a G4 is a G4. There are small revisions within processor steppings, cache sizes, and etc. But ultimately a processor is a processor. Not much difference there.
Now if they’re cutting out G4’s altogether for G5’s and intel systems, that’s different.
Besides, the drivers are already written. That’s the ‘beauty’ of apple’s business model, they have most of the code in their corner, and under normal circumstances all it’d need would be a recompile. A G4 is a G4.
A recompile isn’t exactly the most expensive thing you can do to reward a loyal customer now, is it?
I was halfway kidding when I said it, but it does bear repeating. I’ve been spoiled by linux. :-)
That’s what the tech guy said, that he’d bought one new, and that he’d picked up four others used over the years to grab the analog board for his as those croaked one after the other.

The problem is that they’re not that old. My 800mhz G4 eMac was built in 2003.
