Talk about sore winners.
Griffin Whitman, a 10-year-old Red Sox [team stats] fan from Swampscott, was excited to attend his first Yankees vs. Red Sox game Friday night. The young autograph -collector was even more thrilled to score Yankees outfielder Shelley Duncans signature before the game. That is, until Griffin read the message from the 27-year-old rookie: Red Sox suck! Shelley Duncan.
It was cool to get his autograph, Griffin said. It didnt make me feel happy when he wrote that.
Griffins mother, Karen, blasted the Yankees sluggers bad manners.
This is someone who wears the Yankee uniform and is on the payroll and should be setting an example for 10-year-olds, she said.
Duncan, son of St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, has become a fan favorite in the Bronx for hitting mammoth home runs since he was called up from the minors in July.
Yesterday afternoon, a Yankee spokesman declined to comment until he got a chance to speak to Duncan.
Lol.
Shelly’s probably mad because his parents named him after a girl.
Let me ask you something, How does a New Yorker decide to be either a Mets or Yankee fan? I’m just curious.
Big deal
True. It’ll take a long time to clean up after the clintons and the kennedys (ala Teddy) are long gone...
Duncan needs to grow up, how would a major league player feel if this happened to their kid.
Not a classy move.
My Entire Team Sucks
Of course, you already knew that!
The only Shelley’s I know...are girls.
What a goober.
Dang...!!
I am envious....
That's one of my dreams...to see the green monster...and the house that Ruth built.
not sure though it may have to do in some ways with geography; Bronx vs. Queens...and the old Giants fans (played in
Manhattan IIRC at Polo Grounds) and Dodgers fans (played
at Ebbets Field Brooklyn) may have become Mets fans—
preferred N.L. baseball, etc.
(I think Polo Grounds was just across the Harlem
river from Yankee Stadium, wasn’t it?)
Some New Yorkers became Red Sox fans, like film critic
Jeffrey Lyons (he just admired Ted Williams, and thus
became a Sox fan) and there’s a group called the Beloved
Loyal Order of Red Sox Diehards, or BLOHARDs.
I forget who said it but the old saying went that “cheering for the Yankees was like cheering for U.S. Steel”. Bernie
Goldberg, who hailed from the Bronx, said he grew up a Yankees fan even though the team was...”Republican”
(I forget exactly what he meant; Goldberg grew up a solid Dem.)
Sinatra hailed from Hoboken and I believe he was a Dodgers fan (”There Used to be a Ballpark” was about Ebbets
Field, I believe) yet the Yanks adopted his rendition of
Theme From NY NY and play it after every win (I think
the Liza version is after losses?)
Humorist Jean Shepherd came from Hammond, IN, and I believe grew up a Chicago White Sox fan like his dad. When he
moved to the NY/NJ area he became a Mets fan possibly because he & his Dad hated the Yanks, IIRC, and maybe the
Mets “lovable losers” image...One edition of his old TV show Jean Shepherd’s America was done at the old
Comiskey Park, I believe, and he talked about his dad
used to get upset at Yankee players like Gehrig.
At least he wasn’t asked to sign the Sox owner’s birthday card!
I do know of those; btw am a Red Sox fan (and I do remember
‘86) but some Sox fans kinda root for the Mets (hey,
Pedro’s back!) because they’re the cross town rivals of
the Yanks. (Got to see Shea Stadium this yr for the first time—and prob. last, as the new stadium starts in ‘09—
and a rain shortened, but official, win over the Nats.)
They used to say, maybe still do, that JETS stood for
Just End The Season. J-E-T-S lose, lose, lose.
Last night did hurt for Sox fans (so close at the end).
We love Sox wins, love Yankees losses, REALLY love it
when Sox beat Yanks. Yankees lose! Theeeeeeeeee
Yankees lose!
LOL.
What an amateur!!!
Years ago (when the O’s still played in Memorial Stadium), some enterprising young men burned “Sox Suk” onto the outfield grass right beyond 2nd base before a big series with the Bosox.
He’s 6’5”. I don’t think anyone ever gave him a hard time about it. :-)
And of course there are the bumper stickers (or, as we say,
bumpah stickahs) that say I Love New York too—It’s The
Yankees I Hate.
Red Sox fans have shouted Yankees Suck and I’ve heard
Yankee fans shout Boston Sucks and I think, no wait,
don’t say the whole city of Boston sucks—just boo the team
itself. We don’t say New York Sucks, just Yankees suck.
(Though with some of the politicans who hail from
Boston...they may have a point :P :)
Usually by the parents.
