Talk about sore winners.
Griffin Whitman, a 10-year-old Red Sox [team stats] fan from Swampscott, was excited to attend his first Yankees vs. Red Sox game Friday night. The young autograph -collector was even more thrilled to score Yankees outfielder Shelley Duncans signature before the game. That is, until Griffin read the message from the 27-year-old rookie: Red Sox suck! Shelley Duncan.
It was cool to get his autograph, Griffin said. It didnt make me feel happy when he wrote that.
Griffins mother, Karen, blasted the Yankees sluggers bad manners.
This is someone who wears the Yankee uniform and is on the payroll and should be setting an example for 10-year-olds, she said.
Duncan, son of St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, has become a fan favorite in the Bronx for hitting mammoth home runs since he was called up from the minors in July.
Yesterday afternoon, a Yankee spokesman declined to comment until he got a chance to speak to Duncan.
Stay classy Duncan.
Ensuring another generation of Red Sox fans that hate the Yankees... That’s what a rivalry is all about... perfect.
I wonder how long before this shows up on ebay?
I wonder how long before the Sox trade for him.
“This is someone who wears the Yankee uniform and is on the payroll and should be setting an example for 10-year-olds, she said”
The boy’s mother should be looking to someone other than a sports star to set a good example. She probably calls these guys “heroes” too.
Update from today’s Herald (and to the young lad: well,
whaddaya expect from a member of Team Hillary?)
By most accounts, rookie Shelley Duncan has positively changed the culture of the Yankees clubhouse with his jovial demeanor.
Yet this weekend, that same demeanor brought Duncan some unwanted notoriety.
While he signed autographs before Fridays series opener, Duncan exchanged playful banter with some Red Sox [team stats] fans. In keeping with the spirit of those conversations, he wrote in the notebook of 10-year-old Griffin Whitman, Red Sox Suck! Shelley Duncan.
Duncan was surprised to learn that Whitman and his parents took offense.
I thought I was back in middle school or high school, where you try to make a joke or say something funny, and you end up saying something that gets you in trouble, Duncan said before the Yankees 4-3 victory last night. I try to be interactive with people, be funny, have a good time and have a laugh.
Its not always Yankees fans that have us sign stuff. I try to rile em up and be fun. I dont expect anybody to make a big deal about it. Nobody ever has before.
While Red Sox pitcher and Boston native Manny Delcarmen said he has never offered such an epithet to a fan, he does sometimes exchange playful barbs, particularly when offering autographs to Yankee loyalists.
You look at them and you say, Youre wearing Yankees stuff but you want my autograph? Delcarmen said. I grew up here in Boston. When a Yankees fan asks for an autograph, Im like, Whatever. I still sign for them.
No, no, no! Read it again! It says “Red Sox Slick!”
Maybe not smart but at least the Sox won a championship
in this century.
THE CURSE OF HILLARY WILL LIVE ON
Ha—just like a theatre in the Boston area called
the FLiCK (that’s how their logo goes). Wait a minute,
does THAT say...
Each time I have heard ten year old kids heckle the opposing team with much harder words than “You Suck!”
This kid needs to toughen up and hope he lives another 88 years so that he can once again see the Red Sox win the World Series.
Dear Yankees Fans:
I am so thrilled that our beloved pinstripes are heading back to the playoffs! As a lifelong Yankee fan (together with
my husband Bill), you know I can’t wait to see players
like Derek Giambi and Alex Posada play against the
Chicago Cubs in the first round of the AL Playoffs. It’ll
be just as exciting as when we beat Arizona in 2001,
Florida in 2003, and the Red Sox in 2004 in the World
Series.
I hope you will also take this moment to give me your
full support, in the form of a nice donation, to
us here at Team Hillary. Go Yankees!
yours in the pinstripes,
Hillary Rob’Em Clinton
Good one!
The Whitmans ... Another in the ever-growing list of Americans who’ve had their sense of humor surgically removed.
Video on youtube has a Red Sox fan going through the
bleachers at Yankee Stadium as the fans yell out,
A— Hole! A— Hole! at him. To be expected on both
sides i guess.
And yes, I know this pic is a Photoshop from a Dutch soccer game.
