San Diego rallies to save libtalk (tell the world: I am on 'LSD!)

As I mentioned a couple weeks back, libs in San Diego are anguished because progressive talk station KLSD (those ARE the call letters, I'm not joking!) might be dropping it. How dare Clear Channel consider changing the format to something that actually MAKES money!

Word has it it could happen anytime between now and Oct 1 (it could happen this week, as a new ratings period starts on Thu.) They have held a couple rallies. Oh yeah. Those always work. Be sure to invite the commies from ANSWER and any pothead you can find (the "LSD rally" in San Diego, by the way, is not to be confused with the "Pot Rally" held in Boston yesterday). Speak truth to power, brother! Shout it out loud: I am on 'LSD!! Climb in the back with your head in the clouds, and you're gone.

The Save 'LSD site has a cartoon of a rally (a sign in it says "Hear OUR surge!" and an article saying "Help Keep America a Democracy".

From the site: "We have found ourselves in the front lines of the new American Revolution. Our sole outlet for broadcast progressive news, opinion, commentary, and community dialog is threatened. Clear Channel, which owns KLSD 1360 AM, San Diego’s only voice for Progressives, Democrats, and activists, is taking steps to change the format from Liberal Talk Radio to yet another Sports Talk station... Clear Channel is first and foremost a business, so I want to address their business opportunity, should they want to develop it...However, should Clear Channel continue down the path of replacing our voice to the community with an also-ran Sports Talk format, or shuffling Air American off to a weaker station, we will resist. We will reach out to the press, our elected politicians, to the FCC, and to the public to make our case. This move does not serve the public interest. This move does not serve the community."

Hey pal, radio is a business and if people don't want stupid liberal talk, they won't listen, and sponsors won't advertise. So instead they'll give fans of the Padres and Chargers another chance to talk sports--a format that actually MAKES money.

It's interesting to see http://www.nonstopradio.com a site that rallies prog talk fans to organize and bring the format back to cities where it has been dropped: Boston, Akron Ohio, Memphis, Cincy, New Haven, and more. So far there has been one station that changes its mind (The Mic in Madison, WI). But that's been it.

("Several reliable sources place the loss of KLSD in San Diego anywhere from Friday, September 14th to Monday, October 1st. More must be done, and must be done immediately! San Diego is taking action to keep their link to Air America, Jon Elliot, Ed Schultz, Stacy Taylor, Mike Malloy, Scooter and Progressive Talk"-- NonStopRadio.com)

In 2004 when Air America launched, Jon Sinton predicted 600 stations would have the format by 2009. How's that going? What do they have, maybe 40? 60? 80? Not exactly huge and successful stations, either. Rush has nothing to worry about. The launch of "Air America 2.0" hasn't been much to brag about. One station in Atlantic City, NJ, picked it up while outlets in places like Portland, ME and Memphis dropped it. No huge numbers of stations picking it up anytime soon.

People don't want prog talk (they DO have NPR, after all, and the rest of the liberal media). In fact prog talk failed in places like Boston ("the blue-est city in the bluest state in the country"). Up in Burlington Vermont, it was dropped on WTWK and no effort has been made to bring it back. Maybe a mention or two on a blog, but that's been it. What, they dropped prog talk? Oh. Oh well. I'll just turn my Ipod on.

We'll see if this effort can save progressive talk in San Diego but if people tune in one day and hear, "So, what's the over-under on the Chargers game today?" instead of "Impeach Bush now!", well, it'll be no surprise.

In Memphis, libtalk is now “Fox Sports 680”.

In Boston it has been “La Nueva Rumba, Orgullo Latino (Latin Pride)” since last December.

Notice that the long list of things to do if Clear Channel “continues down the path” does not include “buy the station? “ Note well the RATs don’t want to risk their own capital but are content to tell Clear Channel what to do with theirs. Come on, RATs, put your money where your mouth is!

I’ve actually said that myself. In Boston, for example, I had suggested Stephen Mindich, owner of the Boston Phoenix weekly (extremely liberal in its viewpoints) buy an AM station
and put prog talk on it (he already has a long-running
alternative rock station, WFNX). He has yet to do so.
Even though he’s a lib, he has enough business sense
to know that such a station would fail.

Maybe John Kerry can donate some money (he must have
$700 million, a billion, something like that, courtesy of
his second wife’s first husband’s trust fund). C’mon
John, buy a station and bring Air America back to
Boston. It’ll make money, I assure you. John? ...John?...
(he hung up) :)

That is, everything but support the advertisers by buying
their products.

If KLSD needs a draw, Howie Carr might be available,
depending on the outcome of his efforts to re-define
the non-compete terms in his expiring contract.

Liberals can only survive with handouts from others. Usually by force.

Geez, what are they complaining about.

They’ve got PBS/NPR. On my dime.

Yeah—you oughta see the wailing on lib message boards about how far-right-wing the media is. And when you point out NPR
they say oh no, it’s fair and balanced.

A cartoon posted
on Talking Radio (left-leaning) shows a teeter-totter
with “PBS, MSNBC, WaPo, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, NYT, and NPR”
on the left side and a tiny box saying “talk radio” on the
right. A man wearing a T-shirt saying “Libs” says, “Hmm,
that’s not really balanced at all. Better start regulating
radio.” ...but the site captioned it on the bottom
“The World According to Conservative Wing Nuts”
