Pit bull attack claims life of family's beloved dog

SEATTLE -- A neighborhood is reeling after two pit bulls viciously attacked a man and his 2-year-old dog.

Bob Walston said he and his dog, Maggie, were taken by surprise by the pit bulls while they were out walking on Tuesday morning. He said there was no owner in sight.

"Those pits we're going so fast, and they just grabbed Maggie. And I started screaming, 'help help, someone help' as loud as I could," he said.

Bob grabbed Maggie to try to save her, but he said the pit bulls refused to give up, biting him as he tried to get away.

"Bob comes rushing through the door, and he's bloody from head to toe," said Lillian Walston, his wife.

Bob got away in time, but it was too late for Maggie, who died shortly after the attack.

Now her dog toys sit, untouched, as flowers from the neighbors crowd the Walstons' counter.

Bob and Lillian are still trying to say goodbye to Maggie, who has been laid to rest in the backyard. Even though they're filled with sadness over Maggie's death, the couple says the attack could have been much worse.

"We were lucky in that it wasn't one of the grandchildren that were killed. These were two fierce dogs. They would have mauled our grandchildren to death," Lillian said.

Following the attack, neighbors caught one pit bull immediately and the Seattle Animal Shelter picked up the other one on Wednesday. Bob and other witnesses identified the dogs, but the pit bulls' likely fate does little to ease the Walstons' new fears.

"It changed our whole life. It'll never be the same," Lillian said.

But Don Jordan with the shelter said measures will be taken to prevent future tragedies.

"The city is going to make every effort to make sure that these animals are not returned into the neighborhood and are, in fact, destroyed," he said.

The owners of the quarantined dogs face fines of up to $1,000 for letting his pit bulls run loose.

Great reason for “concealed carry”.

Well I blame Bush. If it wasn’t for his illegal war in Iraq these Pit Bulls would never have attacked this guy.

When will we learn? *shakes head*

Like Dr. Frankenstein's 'monster' they start out being good guys but are easily turned to the dark side.

What we need is to prosecute dog owners for the actions of their pets. If you own such a dog and it kills someone, that should be murder...

Seattle does not give LTCs. Simulated 'sorry about that'.

He said there was no owner in sight.
The owners of these dogs need to be jailed for a while. That will teach them to let their dogs run loose.
While I love dogs, the Pit Bull is one breed that I would never own. Just on liability alone.

If you own such a dog and it kills someone

So this applies to all dogs or just one deemed on the "big and scary" list?

yup! And, if it was an animal it killed then there still need to be consequences. And I better be able to kill that POS dog too if it was my pet! I am sorry. I know my dog is not a person but if some other animal killed him, it would devastate me!

It's actually the tort lawyers who are driving this. It turns into easy money from lawsuits that lines their pockets and the more the pitbulls can be portrayed as monsters, the easier it is for them to cash in.

They've locked in on pitbulls and the pitbull breed as evil attack dogs and the pitbull owners have done little or nothing to counter them.

The post said “dog” not a specific breed.

Funny...you don't hear about, say, Cocker Spaniels killing people. Its almost always pit bulls.

Having had a similar experience... being attacked by stray dogs... any owner not in control of their animals and these breeds, in particular, should be severely fined and if any harm is inflicted on human or pet, should be jailed automatically. If the person is killed by their animals, that should be considered murder.

It's selective reporting by the media. Pit bulls do kill more than cocker spaniels. They're not comparable animals. But I will say that chows bite more than any other dog, pit bulls included, and no one talks about them because they don't have the jaw pressure to kill like a pit bull.

If on the same day in a small town a pit bull kills someone and a bullmastiff kills someone, the media is going to talk about the pit bull-related death. That's the way it is. Kind of like when the media drummed up "shark attack" fear a few years ago in a year that shark attacks were way down but the media had nothing better to talk about.

In a perfect world we don’t. However if people cannot act responsibly then we need some assistance. I don’t like it but, what if it had been a child?

I have seen several threads about pit bulls killing and maiming folks and the pit bull defenders have not stepped forward with their usual spin. Have they given up?

Well, besides the obvious size and strength differences, cockers aren't currently the "in" dog among thugs.
