you can physically only use the iPhone on AT&T or T-mobile in the US. They’re the only people with compatible network freqencies - and T-mobile sucks worse than AT&T does. So maybe AAPL takes over T and fixes it?

Not likely. T-mobile is partially owned by the German government. And they haven’t invested much into their infrastructure here.
