(CBS) NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. -- A pregnant woman stabbed another pregnant woman to death after a brawl at the homeless shelter where they were living, police said.
Shantelle Scruggs, 21, was arraigned Saturday on manslaughter charges in the killing of Barbara Santos, 26. Both women were eight months pregnant and lived at the Project ReDirect homeless shelter with about 20 other people.
Scruggs fought with Santos, both mothers of two young children, in another resident's bedroom about 10 p.m. Friday night and stabbed her in the chest, police said. Santos died at a nearby hospital about an hour later; attempts to save her baby were not successful.
"Apparently there had been an ongoing feud for a couple of days," said Detective Jack Fitzpatrick. "The basis of that feud is unclear."
A telephone number was not available for the North Bay Shore shelter. Telephone and e-mail messages left at Project ReDirect's Babylon offices weren't immediately returned Saturday.
The agency was founded in 1996 "to assist the rapidly growing population of young parents without a place to go home," according to its Web site.
Santos' relatives say they only just learned Santos was in a shelter. They say the young mother worked at a supermarket and was taken advantage of in a real estate scam that left her almost penniless and homeless.
Almost ready to give birth and in jail, Scruggs is now without her one year old twins, who police say were turned over to child protective services

This just makes me sick. I know several fine women who either have had trouble conceiving or had stillbirths and these types breed like rabbits.
