Installing a wireless USB connection went by without a hitch with my Compaq using XP Pro, but not with this machine.
What am I missing?
OS 9.2
It won't be doing anything heavy- mainly just surfing. How do I upgrade the OS?
Here is the data on that particular iMac:
According to the website above, OSX 10.3.9 (Panther) is the most up-to-date OS you can install on this machine.
On October 5th, your iMac will be at least 8 years old. That's when it was discontinued.
You'll have to find a CD install set of OSX.3 to install it on this particular iMac because I think that model only has a CD-ROM reader. If you want to keep OS9, you can purchase and install this:
WIFI solution for older non-airport ready Macs.
and that should solve your wireless problem. Keep in mind that the USB WIFI dongle sells for more than the value of your iMac.
If you stay with OS9.2, you will be limited to using Internet Explorer 5 for Mac or Netscape Navigator 7 and many of the more modern things on the internet will probably not display correctly because those are antique browsers. If you upgrade to Panther, you can use Safari and most of the internet will work fine.
I hope this helps.
Forgive the stupid sounding question, but how do I do that?
Well, you’ll probably be best off leaving well enough alone at this point if you’re brand new to Macs...

Here’s a good resource for you about the OS you’re running.
The entire lowendmac website should prove useful as well.
Thanks for the link-
How did you get online with that old mac?
Don’t tell me you have the Belkin click monitor switch thing to use that Gateway computer with the iMac monitor???
It’s got an ethernet plug.
The switch toggles between the Dell and the Gateway. The gateway is online with the Linksys.
Phone only has $0.23 left on it.
How is it for browsing? About the same as the old Compaq 333 Futch had?
Also I wouldn’t think OSX would be any slower than say running Vista on that Dell 800, and that wasn’t too bad. Does your iMac still have a SCSI hard drive? I remember the one that I messed with that was in the trash had one, which also had an OSX upgrade cd in the plastic sleeve. IIRC around the time Apple switchd to Intel processors they started using IDE drives. Then again I may be imagining that, and for all I know they still use only SCSI drives...
I wonder if you can put a bigger HD in it. This ones all of 5 gigs.
I'd have to break into it to find out the drive type because I don't know where to find that info online.
“Show contents while dragging” is what I’m looking for but I don’t see it.
Good luck with that. I'm guessing since it's an Apple you're lucky to be able to drag and drop even.
You’re probably right.
