Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - benign
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 09/05/2007 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

benign • \bih-NYNE\ • adjective

1. of a gentle disposition; gracious *
2a. showing kindness and gentleness
2b. favorable, wholesome
3a. of a mild type or character that does not threaten health or life, especially not becoming cancerous
3b. having no significant effect; harmless

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

Mr. Richardson was a benign man and an excellent teacher, and the children loved and trusted him instinctively.

Did you know?
"Benediction," "benefactor," "benefit," "benevolent," and "benign" are just some of the English words that derive from the well-tempered Latin root "bene," which means "well." "Benign" came to English via Anglo-French from the Latin "benignus," which in turn paired "bene" with "gignere," meaning "to beget." "Gignere" has produced a few offspring of its own in English. Its descendants include "congenital," "genius," "germ," "indigenous," and "progenitor," among others.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack!

“Help me dear,” she groans to her husband.

The husband calls 911 on his cell phone, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter, and lines up his putt.

His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. “I’m dying over here and you’re putting?”

“Don’t worry dear”, says the husband calmly, “they found a doctor on the second hole and he’s coming to help you.”

“Well, how long will it take for him to get here,” she asks feebly?

“No time at all”, says her husband. “Everybody’s already agreed to let him play through.”

His credibility with who? It’s only a distraction if they keep piling on and I think it makes the attackers look worse for it. His conservative record is not bad. He should finish his term and walk away. Would you expect a democrat to quit? Why endorse a double standard?

Since you're in charge of reminding us how many days there are until Christmas, get a load of this!

No, I would not. However, I also hold republicans to a higher standard than democrats hold democrats. That is why republican voters throw out their Foleys while democrats simply reelect theirs. Regardless of his voting record, he will be ineffective for the rest of the term, while his replacement may be able to get something accomplished.

We’re all entitiled to our own opinion. I don’t approve of railroading the guy. And I do think Ben Stein is right on this issue. Who looks intolerant by this action? How long would the process take for him to resign and have another person appointed to fill out his term, however long it may be? I don’t know.

I disagree. What is to stop him from being effective at his job?

Since you're in charge of reminding us how many days there are until Christmas,

It's still a bit early for that, but here's a hint:

That may not be an option. I may be moving over Christmas, and if that’s the case, no presents for anyone. :-)

I want a house!!! (whine, stamp, pout)

Home from work and getting ready to grill some shrimp for my birthday dinner-I’m WAY too tired to get all dressed up and go out. Hubby offered to take me to the la-de-da restaurant across the water after he gets home from work, but I told him I’d rather cook my own special dinner-at least I know it will be hot and not lukewarm when served, I will be able to make a positive ID on the side dishes, the wine will be properly chilled-and all for a fraction of the cost of that overpriced place-

I have to laugh at queen Hillary
When she tries to look benign-
She likely has a devil’s mark
Tattooed somewhere as her sign

Her likeability numbers are
So low they’re headed south
If that really concerns her
She ought to close her mouth

And not make it so obvious
She’s using the same playbooks
That recommend threatening rivals
And taking donations from crooks
