Mountain lion breaks into Napa home
the napa valley ^ | August 31, 2007

What a surprise for Dr. Jim Borge, when he heard all the commotion in his kitchen recently in his home on Silverado Trail near Monticello Road.

When Jim walked into the kitchen, he found his dog fighting with a mountain lion.

The mountain lion came in through the doggy door. Jim is an avid outdoorsman and knew how to scare the cat. He grabbed a broom and yelled at the cat as he beat it, and he ran back out through the doggy door.

When Dr. Borge was out for a walk the next day, he was walking by his neighbor’s house. Charlie Harper asked him, “What’s new?” and he told him about the mountain lion encounter.

Coming in through a doggy door is pretty bold, but the mountain lion probably wanted the dog and watched him enter through the door.

The Sylvester cartoon where a panther gets loose from the zoo and Spike the Bulldog thinks it's Sylvester until the panther slices him into vertical slabs of meat with one swipe of his paw:

"B-b-b-b-b-b-big C-c-c-c-c-cat!"

If I had a doggie door I would have all kinds of creatures in my house. No mountain lions but I would have raccoons, possums, squirrels, rats, small burglars, mice, maybe even skunks. No thanks to doggie doors.

I’m sure glad we have a very small doggy door door for our 5 lb Yorkie. We have had a mountain lion or two spotted in the neighborhood in the last few years.

The joke with those who know Jim, is: The cat was smart and lucky to get out of Jim’s house.”

There was a sighting of a big pussy cat at St John’s School last week, forcing the closure of the school that day.

Know it alls, including the Fish and Game tried to discount the sighting by multiple people at different times and places.

We have had a very dry year, and the deer and wild turkeys are down near homes feeding on roses and other planted items, and the turkeys get driven out of the vineyards when the harvest starts.

The big cats are like Willy Sutton except they go where their next meal is.

I've posted these great pix on various cougar threads ... usually with the title: "Honey, the cat wants in."

That was all most as bad as the mauling of woman, her husband, friend, and big dog got in the early 1990’s in the Ukiah/Willet’s area. The woman, a sister of a pharmacist, I knew, finally killed the cat with a big Ginzu knife.

As far as I can glean from 'net research these pix got the story 'enhanced' by the retelling/circulating of it. Dr. Dave Rogers is the primary source, or so I think.

I thought they were taken in Joseph, OR.

Oregon had a hunting ban using dogs to hunt them.
