Nick Lowe threw a no-hitter with the “Cruel To Be Kind” single in 1979.

You’re very kind to say such a thing.

Sorry, it was Derek Lowe, not Nick Lowe, who threw that no-hitter a few years back for the Red Sox. Nick Lowe is apparently some sort of “singer-songwriter.”

Buchholz was the 17th rookie to accomplish this

It is 20. I just doubled check myself, thanks for the correction.

I just qualified to be a fact checker for a MSM news outlet. LOL.

I am dead serious. Your bright, quick wit is one of the greatest things about FR.

Everyone here knows exactly what I am saying. Here we are, scrolling down on some serious thread, and wham, we get blindsided by something hilarious from petronski.

You add something to FR like no one else.

Is anyone going to tell Sam that it was Derek Lowe?

Buchholz became the third pitcher since 1900 to throw a no-hitter in his first or second major league start, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

as a Red Sox fan, this is the most I’ve had to cheer about in a miserable week of losses to the Skankees.

Worth repeating. :)

Hopefully the Evil Empire lost today to make it a perfect day.

Ckenens’ first strikeout game was in Apr of 86 vs Seattle with
a rather small crowd at Fenway...second was vs. Detroit
10 yrs later...

wikipedia:
>>The second performance came more than 10 years later, on September 18, 1996 against the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Clemens’s second 20-K day occurred in his second-to-last game as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

No no-hitters yet.
Schilling had a no-no going on June 9 but gave up a hit
with 2 outs in the 9th.

>>First time a rookie pitcher every pitched a no hitter

I thought I heard that Wilson Alvarez of the White Sox
did, too (and also on his second ML start)

Wikipedia:
>>In 1991, Wilson Alvarez of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter in his second career major league start. During Alvarez’s first career start, he allowed three runs on a pair of home runs and did not retire a single batter. Bud Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals threw a no-hitter toward the end of his rookie season (2001); he started the following season with the Cardinals, then was demoted to the minor leagues after a lackluster start to his second season. He never pitched in the majors again and has since retired.

>>On September 1, 2007, Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox pitched a 10-0 no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in his second career major league start. He’d won his first major league outing two weeks earlier, and was only pitching against the Orioles because scheduled starter Tim Wakefield had suffered a back injury.

>>In all, 20 rookies have pitched a no-hitter.

>>Hideo Nomo of the Red Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Orioles in 2001.

and Derek Lowe pitched one at Fenway a year later IIRC
(vs. Tampa Bay?)

And Dave Morehead in 1965 no-hit Cleveland, 2 - 0 score. ;-)

Matt Young of Red Sox no-hit the Indians once but wasn’t credited with it because he only pitched 8 innings—the Indians WON (1-0,
I think...and of course thanks to errors or walks it is
possible to score a run w/o a hit). Since the Tribe
didn’t have to come up in the bottom of the 9th (game
was at Cle.), it was just 8 innings and baseball
doesn’t recognize it as a no-no.

It’s been said if a team’s in first place by 6 games or so
on Labor Day, they’re in pretty good shape to win the
division. I think Red Sox are up by 5 right now...well,
Bos. leads Balt. 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth while the
Yankees are losing to Tampa Bay 8-2 in the bottom of
the ninth.
The Sox could indeed be up by 6 in mere moments, as we head
into Labor Day.

I believe I wrote “This is one in the history book for the Red Sox. First time a rookie pitcher every pitched a no hitter”.
My enthusiasm caused a terrible sentence structure. Meant to mean first time for the Red Sox to have a rookie pitch a no hitter. No excuses it was a terrible post, structure and spelling!
