Why does my dog rub its body on dead snakes?
Posted on 09/01/2007 9:20:11 AM PDT by SamAdams76
Whenever I am walking my dog and we see a dead snake on the roadway, my dog likes to rub its body on top. It will flop down and roll over and over on top of the flattened dead snake.
Why does my dog do that? Is it some primordial urge that cannot be explained?

"Whenever I am walking my dog and we see a dead snake on the roadway,..."OK....now THAT seems like one of those 'finish this sentence' games.
(sorry...don't have a clue why your dog would do that)

"Sometimes a snake is just a snake."

I think they do it as a form of advertizing. Both to leave their scent on the snake and to pick up the snake scent to tell other dogs that they’ve been there. Mine seem to have a love of dead moles.

Is it some primordial urge that cannot be explained? The explanation is really quite simple. Your dog hates you. He's trying to cover himself with a rare virus which is lethal to both snakes and humans but to which dogs have acquired a mysterious immunity.
So tonite when you're fast asleep your dog is going to rub that nasty lethal snake virus ridden fur of his all over you.
Then in a few days you'll expire and your dog will then have completely unfettered access to all of the kibble in the closet, the beer in your refrigerator, and your remote control.
It's all part of the Dog Master Plan to Rule the Earth.

Does he tap his paw first?
To: Charles Henrickson
I don’t think it taps any paws. It will see a dead snake and go into a bit of a frenzy. My theory is that it is trying to put the snake scent on itself. For what reason, I have no idea.

Anna Nicole rubbed her body on a dead snake and inherited a few million, IIRC.

Why does my dog do that? Because if he did it to a live snake, he might get bit.
To: Lurker
So......what are you wearing right now? Well, these socks were new when I put them on this morning, but it's 8:36 p.m. now and the newness has sort of worn off.

My theory is that it is trying to put the snake scent on itself. That makes scents.
