If a person is to poor to buy groceries they pick the leaves from the Poke Weed Plant to cook like turnip greens. In the south it grows wild along fence rows next to the Queen Anne's Lace or in clearings in the woods. It is especially healthy around the hog lots. You only pick the top tender leaves and when you have filled the poke sack you can say you have "picked a mess of poke salad."
My Mom fixed it many times in my youth but I was what you call a "picky eater" so I never ate it. It was always the kids job to pick it and I have done that numerous time.
The song is about a girl that is tough from living a hard life.
The Poke Weed Plant was named that because you take it home in a poke sack.
"American Heritage Dictionary"
| poke Chiefly Southern U.S. A sack; a bag. [Middle English, probably from Old North French; see pocket.] A pig in a poke is concealed in a sack from the buyer. The noun pokemeaning a bag or sack dates from the 14th century in English. In many parts of Scotland poke means a little paper bag for carrying purchases or a cone-shaped piece of paper for an ice-cream cone. The Oxford English Dictionary gives similar forms in other languages: Icelandic poki, Gaelic poc or poca, and French poche. |
Sukiyaki was the #1 Hit in 1963 for Kyu Sakamoto. Kyu (pronounced "Cue") died in a crash of Japan Airlines 747 near Tokyo on August 12, 1985. He was 43 years old at the time of his death. Sukiyaki remains the biggest international hit by a Japanese singer to this day.
I was ten years old and remember it well.
A number one American hit with not a word of English.
Sometimes the delivery is the only thing that counts.
Love that one!
Hope y'all do too.
Most excellent song! Imagine, a 20-something young woman with no gimmick (ala Brittany, etc.) whatsoever! I really like that.
