A Good Samaritan helped police track down a man accused of locking a 16-year-old inside a grocery store bathroom and trying to assault her, police said.
"The victim was screaming inside the restroom," said shopper Kenny Rosar.
"She was screaming for help," he said.
Bystanders said they frantically pounded on the door.
"Apparently the door was either blocked or locked from the inside," said Sgt. Richard Schrivens with Peoria police.
The man inside finally opened the door, Schrivens said.
"Some guy came running out of the bathroom and she started yelling, 'Chase after him,'" Rosar said.
Rosar said he and a Department of Public Safety officer chased the man into the store's parking lot where he was trying to flee in his car.
"He tried to get his key in his car," Rosar said.
"He kind of caught me by suprise and I tried to put my arm around him. I slipped, and when I went back at him, he kicked me in the stomach and took off running," Rosar said.
The man ran across several lanes of traffic at Cactus Road and 75th Avenue.
Rosar said they thought they lost sight of him. Then he saw the man jump over a few walls.
Police said they found the man hiding in a back yard nearby.
The girl is doing OK, police said.
"I met her family," Rosar said.
"She said thanks for doing what you did," he said.
