The Miss Teen USA pageant contestant who became a YouTube sensation after butchering a question about why many Americans cannot find the U.S. on a world map says she was overwhelmed by her national television appearance and chalks up the experience to being “human.”

My apologies sir, I always assumed based on your comments though the years that you were an old fart, rather than a middle aged fart.

Not one news outlet was able to verify the validity of the question. I’ll give her a pass. (What’s going on in South Africa these days anyway?)

“Die-raq” - she kept calling Iraq “Die-raq.” I thought it was some lefty anti-war thing she had heard somewhere and wanted to make sure she worked it into the convo.

Sure! Just remember that she is only 17.

17 is legal in Georgia.

Someone told this girl that whatever the question is just make sure you mention Iraq and South Africa. Then it became clear that there was no way to mention them in an educated way and what we have is the final product.

Pageant Emcee: What is the one most important thing our society needs?

Gracie Hart: That would be... harsher punishment for parole violators, Stan. [crowd is silent]

Gracie Hart: And world peace! [crowd cheers ecstatically]

Pageant Emcee: Isn't she lovely? Thank you, Gracie Lou.

Gracie Hart: And thank *you*, Stan. [Gracie walks offstage]

The transcript says she was saying “the Iraq,” as if it were “the United States,” or (as we used to say) “the Ukraine.” (The Crimea, the Caucasus, for those who took geography ...)

However, your observation, that she was saying “Die-rack,” is pretty persuasive. That’s probably what her Social Studies teacher says, in the classroom with no maps.

Beauty pageants are "football games" for gals.

You might think that guys would like them, but that's not the way it works; the contestants are competing not at stunning the guys but at impressing the judges (who will not be Joe Sixpack and will probably be women journalist/celebrity types) that they would stun Joe Sixpack if that was what they were trying to do.

And the interview part of the contest is the most extreme example of the difference. The interview is not an intellectual contest. To the contrary it is a Political Correctness contest. The challenge is to come up with the safest answer. If the question is about failure of teens to know something simple, the answer it is that "Class sizes are too big, and teachers aren't paid enough." The entire Democratic Party, and most importantly all journalists, will adopt you as their sweetheart. And therefore the judges will swoon.

The best moment of the pageant was shortly after Miss South Carolina’s stammering when Miss New Jersey was asked what is missing in the education of teens today. She answered “Public Speaking” and went on to explain her point as well as anyone could have. I was surprised she didn’t win.

15 in Arkansas and you can prove you are cousins. (Or as one of the fellows from across the river put it when the news about the DNA test on the blue dress came out: It means nothing, just that the stain came from someone from Arkansas.)

She finally answered the question on the Today Show; Acceptable, brief answer, cute, but not intellectual.
Typical aspiring graphics designer; or "reporter".

Just saying.

Mrs. Laz (if any) allows you to be chasing girls young enough to be your grandaughter?

WOW! You're right! If I had a child at the age of 13, who had one at the age of 13, she COULD be my grandaughter! ..... 17 is legal in Georgia.

According to my calculations, you would still miserably fail the Half Your Age Plus Seven Rule in regards to a seventeen year old.

If your love interests are younger than 28 and a half years old, society reserves the right to label you a "Dirty Old Man".

You may think that is unfair and arbitrary, and maybe it is, but them's da Rules!

In fact, I'm a Dirty Old Bastard.

18 years old— national television— going to Appalachian State (good school, but not THAT hard to get into)— beauty queen-— trying to deliver canned response to likely unanticipated question— I’m not sure I would have done much better if flustered— how about the rest of you?

She tried to say that some Americans don’t care about world issues, such as what’s happening in Iraq and South Africa. And since they focus more personal issues or what happens their community, it explains why some may not be able to find their place on a world map. I don’t think that’s the right answer, or even if there is a right answer, but I thought it was pretty clear what she was saying, or at least trying to say.
