Word For The Day, Thursday, August 9, 2007 - levity
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 10 August 2007 | secret garden

Posted on 08/09/2007 6:08:53 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

levity \LEV-uh-tee\, noun
1. Lightness of manner or speech, especially when inappropriate or excessive; frivolity.
2. Lack of steadiness or constancy; changeableness.

Example sentences:
They sat there in their formal bargeman's rig . . . looking solemn: they were part of a ceremony, and levity, winking, whispering, smiling, had no place in it.
-- Patrick O'Brian, The Hundred Days

I must say that if the doctor was indulging in levity at my expense, it is a levity I find in the worst possible taste.
-- Alfred Alcorn, Murder in the Museum of Man

Etymology:
Levity is from Latin levitas, from levis, "light."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Here's one that the audio is rather important to catch the hilarity of the video: Monty Python Meets Star Wars

from what i understand Mitt Rommey has attracted some ROMNEY girls, a la obama and giuliani girls, to bring some levity to his campaign. i missed it on F&F this AM, though.

Too much of the four-letter word today. I’m off to meetings where I’ll get all the action items now. See you all later.

Best comment on the Telluride thread: Why is anti-impeachment speech venomous but impeachment speech is OK?

friggin liberal journlists slam us every single chance they get, and it goes right through most people without them noticing.

Thanks xsmommy....
..my daughter is going too and leaving our little Jellybean home with Daddy & Grandpa.

A real pajama party with lots to eat and good friends to talk to.
..and did I say CHOCOLATE!...lots of chocolate!

BTW, has anyone ordered their Paul Potts cd yet?

I ordered one last night from Amazon...from the UK.

It doesn't officially get to the states until September.

I just think this man's story is charming and voice, amazing.

Maybe y'all saw him on Britain's Got Talent..a few weeks ago, and he won, and Simon Cowell gave him a recording contract.

He sings .....opera!

It's a REAL rags to riches story!
