The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Thanks for the warning! I’d heard rain, but hadn’t heard the rest.

I sealed that door with just paper and duct tape for now...it ain’t pretty, but it isn’t pretty no matter what, so it’ll do. ;-)

I do need to get some water prepped, though. And figure out where the flashlight is and all.

We have a lot of buckets... if you want to come over and get some. Some with lids... some without that could just be left outside full and be good toilet flushing water unless it freezes :~)

To tell the truth, I don't think it will be all that bad here, the warnings, as usual are on the coast, for 20-30, gusts to 50.

Heya - got a question for you as a resident SME on very cold water.

My characters have to escape from certain death by swimming across the Inverness section of the Caledonian canal. We're talking North Sea lattitudes. The canal is 38 ft wide, full of weeds, has nasty currents due to locks filling and emptying, and the water is in the low 40's in the summertime. They are wearing denim jeans and wool sweaters and/or fleece jackets.

So other than hypothermia symptoms by the time they reach the other side, what other physiological phenomenon might they experience? Could they feasibly get across? What goes through your brain when the water is that cold?

I ask 'cuz I was born and raised in a very warm, land-locked state and think cold water is nice to drink on a hot day.

Low 40s in the summertime? What kind of ice water is that? Even Lake Erie doesn’t get that cold.

I keep empty cat litter buckets around for flushing water... so I’m set there. ;-) But thanks!

Heh, don’t know bout that, going into ‘dark, forboding spaces’ aka the crawlspace is pretty series to us.

But done with the yard work now. Got some stuff in for the winter, still need to do the hoses. K

udos on another good grillin’ day.

I got one light for the sink....think I need two more to go on either side. These are those linkable fluorescent fixtures so I think it’ll work.

Guess I’d better get the fire started.

I thought last weekend was the last weekend for barbecue, but I think I’ll grill the steak outside today.

We grill all year! Sometimes I have to have Joseph shovel the snow out of the way, but grilled meat tastes SO good in the middle of winter!

Didn’t they make one with a ‘trigger’ guard for a while.

The Springfield Armory "Scout" was made for them by CZ (famous, among other things, for the CZ75) in Brno, Czech Republic. It came with a trigger guard, which I removed. I also remove the tags from mattresses and furniture. It's not a fine sporting arm, but both the Ithaca and CZ versions could do their intended job well.

The CZ version even has a couple of tapped holes ahead of the rear sight for a special mount that would allow you to attach some sort of optics. If you liked the AR7, even for collecting purposes, the Scout would have been an excellent addition to a collection. It's out of production now.

Well I just got around to starting the fire. I’ve been planting rabbit food in pots....hopefully I’ll have some fresh salad stuff during the winter.

They’re just finishing the national anthem before the race....

“If you think the last words of the national anthem are ‘Gentlemen, start your engines’, you just might be a redneck.”

*snort* I put a Chicken and Rice casserole in the oven about 15 mins. ago. We're gonna eat 'lupper'; late lunch, early supper, before we go to 5:30 Mass.

When we get the new deck finished, I can start grilling again!

Thanks for the information on the scout; didn’t know it was made by CZ. The CZ rimfire rifles (.22 and .17) are sure heating up a lot of .22 afficianados. Well made, accurate, moderately priced. The CZ line up has quite a few winners in it nowdays.

I agree with you on the removing extraneous labels and some safety (cya type) improvements.

heh, and all these years I thought it was “Play Ball”.

The steak sounded good so that’s what we’re going to have tonight.

Yep. Steak was good....had a salad with it.

Right now I’m contemplating being a bad hobbit and baking brownies. We wants chocolate, Precious.

Heh...I came to the same conclusion, but I don’t have cocoa. I did have a bag of chocolate chips, though.

I’m trying to make chocolate chip bars in the toaster oven. We’ll see what happens. At least it smells good...

Gypsy is guarding the kitchen, the steak is marianating in a pan. She still wants to get her walk, but now is a bit torn between guard duty and a perimeter scout.

mmm. Brownies..sounds like a good idea to us, got milk?
