The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I guess...

Unfortunately I’d just had a big bowl of cereal when I saw your initial dinner post, so I’m just really not at all hungry at the moment. Ungh.

Maybe I should take a rain check so you guys don’t starve? ;-)

That would be a good story, scenic setting, interesting history, personal interest, and certainly a story line that hasn’t been well told in a while. Go for it.

Darn few books or short stories written about forest fire fighting, a classic though is “Fire” by George R Stewart.

OK - you can maybe milk your birthday out for another week! :~)

We’ll talk to you later, maybe a movie when we get back? We’ve got ‘Throw Momma from the Train’.

Always was a good fire fighting movie... much of it was film when/where I was in flight school :~) An ex boyfriend is all over it, as an extra.

It seems like a couple years now, but there was a guy on FR with a certain fetish for a Russian-built tanker plane and spammed fire thread after fire thread with amazing tin-foil-hat assertations that it was a gov’t conspiracy to keep the Russian miracle planes out of the country. If only we had those planes, there’d never be a fire that got out of control. I got a bit heated calling him a moron, but anyway. The pic brought that guy to mind. I can’t remember the plane, tho.

Probably the Beriev BE-200 amphibian.

It looks interesting, but only a handful have been built to date, with an American company supposed to take delivery of seven. If they ever arrived in this country, they would be worthy of a lavish spread in AvWeek, which hasn't happened yet.

As with most Russian equipment, the big question is whether there will be spare parts, and whether it can continue to work without falling apart.

Yes it was, we enjoyed it a lot. I can see how it would get the flight school students ‘fired up’.

Classic was ‘Red Skies Over Montana’. Richard Boone and Tab Hunter (I think). Wasn’t a big budget movie but interesting none the less.

That could be it. Unfortunately fire management is a mult-front effort, the greater part of it being prevention. If only a couple tons of water could be dropped on the maroons who spend all day in court tying the USFS’ hands. Just wishin’ is all.
