Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

What a clever idea!! I bet it looks just great! I brought in the hanging baskets a couple of days ago when the wind was so fierce. Spent the evening eliminating all the lacewings that had taken refuge in the foliage....LSA
Well I’m spraying everything down with imidacloprid and/or cyfluthrin before I bring it in. Hope it’s enough. The sweet potato cuttings that I took are sending out roots like crazy so I need to pot them up too.
Afternoon Win-Mag. I remember those too, though from a far different setting.
During my stint with USFS on the Sitgreaves, I was on a good many fires. The bigger ones got the slurry bombers called in. The spotter plane ‘bear in the air’ for the ‘slurry’ aka fire-retardent bomber base in Winslow AZ was one like that, though it lacked the ‘accesories’ shown in the photo. The slurry bombers were B-17s. Quite a thrill, it were, spotter plane making the initial run then the rumble of the B-17 coming in over the trees.
It was a peaceful and uneventful shift. It went very smoothly and I’m glad since it was my first shift.
I just got up. Got in bed by 8am and slept peacefully till 1pm, at which time Joshua went in the kitchen, flipped on the coffee pot, and then quietly woke me up.
My room was pitch black. Steve put the cardboard up from the new washer in my windows and I slept like a log.
Not too many flyable B-17s around any more, but there are a lot of early-model widebody jetliners in boneyards. Evergreen Aviation has taken a lot of older passenger 747s, and converted them into freighters. It then adds their firebomber conversion, which enables them to switch from freight to firefighting in about 48 hours.

I've seen videos of them flying down a valley, dropping slurry. It's quite awe-inspiring.
The FAA has given its blessing, but I think the USFS is holding back.
Well, I think the Skymaster is an ~ugly~ plane, but I have to say it does look better with guns mounted on it. :~)
You want to go out to dinner with us tonight? We’ll take you out for your birthday :~)
Heh...how long after the actual date can one continue to milk a birthday?
Sure!
Well, I was out of town for your birthday ;~) How about between 4-5 then?
Sounds good. You can ping me - I’m around. Listening to Bob Dylan, doing some tidying.
It seems like a couple years now, but there was a guy on FR with a certain fetish for a Russian-built tanker plane and spammed fire thread after fire thread with amazing tin-foil-hat assertations that it was a gov’t conspiracy to keep the Russian miracle planes out of the country. If only we had those planes, there’d never be a fire that got out of control. I got a bit heated calling him a moron, but anyway. The pic brought that guy to mind. I can’t remember the plane, tho.
We've had a dreary, rainy day today. I got a lot of work done on a cute (gift) baby afghan, being rather unmotivated to do series housework. Will take some pics when I get the little squares all put together. We're having a tough time with Sadie May, she's breaking our heart. The sweet ol' gal is fourteen now and her end is in sight. *sigh* She's the only dog I've ever remotely cared for. Tough days ahead.
I’ve seen the pics of the ‘Evergreen’ that’s a might impressive piece of fire-fighting equipment; probably as much slurry in one of the many tanks as the old ones carried in all four of theirs. That was 35 years ago, so I doubt any are still ‘in service’.
The USFS has a lot more chiefs than indians so I can imagine their decision making process has a geologic time-line.
How about coming over at 3:30? We just decided we’re really hungry, we didn’t have lunch!
Afternoon LF - I recall those threads. He was ‘quite an enthusiastic fan’ of that plane.
Just for trivia’s sake. My “other” Nanowrimo plot, the one I was going to do before i decided to chase terrorists through the UK, was set in Flag and the Main Character’s romantic interest is a Hot Shot. Someday I’ll tell that story. Itsa good one.
Well...I guess. I’m not very hungry yet, though.
Well, you can watch us eat then! :~)
