The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Tam is *still* sleeping in thenewchair. Reckon he thinks I bought it just for him.

When I brought it in, he right away jumped up in it. I pushed it all the way into the office with him riding along.

Crazy cat.

Did you see the thread about the man going to jail after having ignored the Judge who told him to get permits for the work he’d done on his house? I thought about Doughboy; isn’t that what you called your neighbor?

Yup. That's him.

Haven't seen much of him lately.

Not that that's a bad thing or anything.

were some Kings and Queens of England who never spoke 'English', because it was, as you said, deemed to be the 'common' speech.

I do not think that any king from William the Conqueror to Henry IV spoke English. I seem to remember that Henry V was the first to do so.

Well, that’s good ‘cause “I’m Henry the VIII I am” wouldn’t sound quite the same in German...

Cats are that way sometimes, they get an idea that something is theirs, well, turns out they are usually right. Annie is that way with a step-stool we have.

I’m happy to be wrong, but I thought that it was merely urban legend that those royal families didn’t speak English. That in fact they did speak english, though often chose to speak french or german. But all of them were fluent in several languages anyway. I don’t remember where I heard that.

Evenin’ folkses! :-)

Like I said, it’s lucky that she’s pretty.

Lucky for us as much as her. We won’t probably have to support her. :-)

Evening!

The kings of England from Alfred the Great to Harold the Saxon spoke Anglo-Saxon and Latin (except for a few who spoke a Scandinavian language).
From William the Conqueror to Henry IV they spoke Norman French at home, plus Latin.
From Henry V to Queen Anne they spoke English at home, plus various languages they learned, usually Latin, often French, even Greek.
George I and George II spoke German.
Since the time of George III they have spoken English at home, and various other languages, usually including French, that they were tutored in.

Speaking of cats and chairs:

That is a cat, isn't it? I can't say much for the chair, either.
