FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

HELP
Can anyone help me with Waylon. We moved last Friday so he’s been down at our cabin now for 9 days. A few days ago he started getting an awful dry cough. He also was acting sluggish. I had the vet up and she said he’s probably allergic to something. His temp was normal, heartbeat, etc. all normal. She gave me an antihistamine to give him and he won’t eat it. I put it in with his grain and he wouldn’t touch it. I then added an apple, sugar and some apple juice to the grain etc. and he picked at it again...
What do you guys use to hide the taste of medicine?

I use yogurt. Mix it in and give it to him, but first find a flavor that he likes. But the other ladies here will give you other remedies. :-)

I would put the meds in a syringe, maybe with apple sauce or syrup and syringe it into his mouth.

Seconded on the big syringe... mash the pills up, mix it with ~something~... I use warm water and molasses, and give it like paste wormer.

Hi ladies!

I went to a rated dressage show today with some of the ladies from my barn. I wanted to get some pictures and video to show you folks some really good dressage, these were upper levels, PSG, Intermediare I & II and Grand Prix, but I must say that the majority of the tests were extremely disappointing. Virtually none were ridden correctly or even well, and 90% of the riders couldn't even halt squarely. Some of the upper level riders even rode like bobblehead dolls. Sloppy riding all around. One woman rode a canter pirouette, and her horse was just falling around instead of pirouetting. One horse was even rearing up on his rider.

Jenny rode Rocky tonight. Here are a few still pictures, I have a few videos I'll load after this.

Getting saddled. That is Dot on the other side. I was cooking supper while she rode her, so I didn't get pictures of that.

The mount.

And warm up.

One more question on loading videos.

It did the same thing to me tonight that it did yesterday. The first one loaded fine, with steady progression in the blue bar. But when I tried to load the second one it jumped to 50% immediately then just stuck. Is there a trick to loading one right after another? Tonight I shut the computer down then restarted and the second one loaded fine then.

Yeah, I thought he looked like he was feeling pretty good. His stop was a bit rough a few times, but over all he did real good. Tues. I’ll get out and trail ride him.

I haven’t read the rest of the posts yet so somebody has probably already suggested this. Try applesauce or molasses. Also soak his hay in water before feeding it. You don’t have to soak it long, just throw a bat in a wheelbarrow full of water, then mix and feed his grain, then give him the hay. Hope he’s better soon.

LOL If I had the money to buy and keep another horse, I’d buy him in a heart beat. If I win the lottery I’ll send a trailer your direction.

Fair enough:)

Your one of the few people I’d like to sell him too. I’d sure like to see him get some kind of use, either riding or breeding, he’s so good, but we just don’t have any use for him. And after watching him yesterday, I think he may miss being used, he seemed to enjoy it, but them since it’s me:), I’m wondering if I’m reading to much into his attitude. Maybe he was just trying to get the riding over with quick so he could go back to his pasture and be left alone:)

I would imagine he’s a lot like Sonny. Enjoys having a job to do and working for a living. Well, Tuffy is like that too. Seems the studs aren’t nearly as lazy as the mares and geldings.

Well, if he could have made it as my CTR horse I’d have never gotten any other horse. He’s just so pokey on trail tho, and I’ve tried everything to speed him up. Crops, spurs, high protein feed, it’s just not going to happen. He’s an arena horse.
