FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

You still got the crud Beaker? I was worried about you the other day when you said you were sick and they were talking about another snow storm in the New England area and about how many people were without power.

They're saying we might get some freezing something this evening. I sure hope not!

We’ve got 23 degrees this morning... I’d complain, but it’s so darn cheerful and sunny, I don’t dare. I like this a lot better than all the rain lately.

I did give the horses a hot mash this morning though.

A little later when it thaws out I’m going to work a horse or two.

Well I’m glad y’all are finally getting some sunny weather, even if it IS cold. The sunshine is good for the spirits. Just bundle up and go out and enjoy it. I’m sure the horses will too.

We’re supposed to have several days of freezing temps starting this evening. I sure am glad I finally got that stock tank heater installed. It’s working really well too. It’s the kind that screws in and replaces the drain plug of the 150 gallon Rubbermaid trough I have and the cord hangs out the back, on the outside of the fence. I plug it up at night with a long extension cord that’s connected to a GFCI and unplug it during the day when it’s warmer. So at least I won’t have to chop ice and worry about keeping water down there. And the horses seem to be drinking more than they were before too, so that’s another positive thing about it.

I can’t believe someone in *Alabama* has a stock tank heater and I don’t have one. ;~)

Hey, I’m a gadget person, what can I say. ;o)

But I just got tired of the chopping and hauling water, coz when you have to remove the busted ice, that takes away a lot of your water too, so you have to worry about filling it back up with a possibly frozen hose. And we generally don’t have more than a few days of freezing weather in a row, so if I’m careful to fill up the trough before the freeze then the 150 gallons ought to do me until the hose thaws out again. Man I’ll be glad when I get my own place and don’t have to worry about these things! You can bet I will NOT be opperating off of 400’ of freezable water hose then!

WOO HOO! We’re getting SNOW here!...Of course it’s not sticking, but it’s kinda pretty to watch. I know it’s kinda old hat to the rest of y’all, but I couldn’t tell you when the last time I saw snow was.

Yeah - having the hose frozen is the worst part. We end up hauling buckets of hot water from the house on those kinds of mornings, to thaw it out and top it off... and that gets old real quick.

I just went out and wormed everyone. The pony is a riot... she’s actually gotten a lot better, she used to do some airs above the ground when she saw the tube. Now she just does this rapid head-bob thing, bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* bonk* and I just bonk* bonk* bonk* hold the bonk* bonk* tube bonk* bonk* bonk* against bonk* bonk* her face bonk* bonk* until she bonk* stops... squirt!

Yes. :~)

But then we’d probably just revert back to airs above the ground. ;~)

Probably so.

Do you give her any kind of a treat when you’re done? A peppermint works for my bunch. I guess it helps get rid of the nasty taste and gives them something a little more pleasant to think about.

It works for when I have to muzzle them too. I used to have to chase them, but now I can get them to come to me from across the pasture and fight over who’s going to get theirs put on first, just by crinkling a peppermint wrapper.

But if peppermint isn’t their thing I’m sure you could find something that was.

I gave her a peanut when she was done :~) She likes those. I never have peppermints around! I should try it! Might change Bay’s mind about crinkly plastic :~)

There's probably a 20 degree difference between sun and shade right now. The horses were still double blanketed and standing in the sun... so I took them off... and they moved to the shade. I guess that means they aren't cold... but go figure!

I don’t really care for peppermints myself but I buy those big huge bags of peppermints just for horsey purposes. I keep a whole plastic peanut butter jar full of them in the barn. Keeping them in the jar with the lid screwed on keeps them from getting all slimy in the humidity. That way any time I have to do something to them, like trimming their feet or their bridle path, or anything they might find annoying, it sweetens the deal a little bit. And they know that it’s coming, or it SHOULD be coming. Whenever they hear me tear loose the velcro to take off my trimming chaps they start getting all expectant-looking. So funny!

No, they don’t. They’re all out in the sun now... and that just makes a lot more sense. ;~)

That snow in the shadows of your picture looks cold. Our snow has started back up and is coming down pretty heavily, in big fluffy flakes, but it’s too warm for it to stick to anything. If only it was a liiiiiitle bit colder. We’ll see if it keeps it up ‘til the temperature drops this evening.
