But a garbage truck drives by on the street... They go on full alert.
But they’re STEALING your garbage!!!
Exactly ;~)
Hi there Rockyridge, welcome to the Thread. Would you like me to add you to the morning ping list? Jump on in and make yourself at home.
It’s 10* here this morning!!! Dang that hurts then you’re not really used to it!
Yesterday I went for my walk and I was bumping it up a knotch. I drove the route first to get the mileage. I went by this one house and a big dog trying to get out of the fence. No big deal. Kind of cute. Across the street this little ankle biter comes charging. I stopped and tried to shoo it away before he got ran over. It yapped and chased me about 100 feet. I was getting tired and things were starting to get familiar. Dang, I had made a wrong turn and made one huge circle and I was back to the dogs again. This time the little one wasn’t out. I got all the way to the corner and here he come. I was hot and tired and in no mood to play and yelled “get out of here” He turned running. Today I’m gonna take some kibbles and work on beast mastering.
The dogs were impressed by the cold, but after awhile didn't seem to mind it so much. Guess it's their Canadian heritage, or something . . .
Hair, I watched your video and Bay is really lame. Since he didn’t show any reaction to hoof testers, do you think his problem could be higher up? Maybe some arthritis kicking in?
SWhen I watched the video yesterday I wondered if it was a shoulder, not a foot. Like you said, arthritis.
I wonder how Bay would react to one of those lameness tests where they hold the foot up for so many seconds then trot the horse off.
It’s supposed to be 72 degrees here by Sunday but right now it’s really cold. I’m dealing with it by sitting at my desk, watching What Not To Wear and searching online for a nightstand that I want. I have this very old Ethan Allen antique pine bedroom suite that I bought about 28 years ago. At that time all I needed was one nightstand but now I want the other one. It was discontinued long ago but I did find one on Ebay. It’s reasonably priced but the seller ships through Greyhound so I would have to go to downtown Fort Worth to pick it up. The bus station is in a lousy part of town.
The little ankle-biters are the ones that always get you the worst. But at least you’re out and walking. That’s more than I can say. Hang in there!
So when’s the old farrier guy supposed to be back?
The farrier was just here... I had gotten the stall stripped in case we had to work inside, but we managed to get them all done between rain showers outside.
Well, we’ll see now how Bay does. If he doesn’t improve rather quickly I’ll have the vet out to do another full lameness exam and find it. I’m thinking now about just putting him on Bute for a week and see. Some arthritis wouldn’t be a big shock, but I do think the obvious pain is in his feet. There is still the history of heel pain, and beyond that, he’s never been barefoot in his life.
Flex tests... they will hyper-flex each joint individually and then trot the horse off and see if it made them sore. That is part of what the vet does when he comes out and does a full exam.
Flex test, that’s what I was trying to think of! All I could come up with was stress test. I swear, I think I’m getting alzheimer’s.
I’m looking for a new shoer. The guy I was using was consistently making my horses sore after a trim by cutting them too short. I finally had enough.
This guy said every single one of ours had ‘right-handed shoer’ syndrome, higher on the left-hand side of the foot when holding the foot up. Pony is actually quite flared on the right side of all her feet, she always gets done last.
I think this guy did a good job, I hope so. He thinks Bay has great feet and, like Mark, is skeptical that he has navicular syndrome, but was willing to settle for a history of possible ‘heel pain’.
I’m sure I’ll take pictures later when they come back in. It’s pouring at the moment. :~\
I think your idea of putting him on bute for a week is right on the money. If he’s still sore after that, then get the vet out. I always try to call the vet as a last resort.
It’s not raining here but it’s colder than gee whiz.
I don’t hesitate to call the vet out, I just think the weather is making it difficult to expect the vet to come out and spend half a day watching Bay move around a slippery pasture.
I’ve got the bute all mixed up. Gonna head out there and give it to him.
So did the bute seem to help?
I had to take Goose in to the vets this morning before work. I noticed a good-sized cut on his right back pastern last night, just as I was leaving. I really don’t know how long it had been there, but my guess is more than a day, judging by the amount of crustiness and swelling. But I couldn’t really doctor it then because all the water is frozen, so I went back down there early this morning and carried some hot epsom salt water with me to try to get the crusts off and see what I really had. But he was too sore for me to be able to do much with it. All I could manage without him jerking his foot away from me was to trickle a little water over it. It needed the hair cut out of it, but there was no way that was going to happen, so I just went back home, got the truck and trailer and went back and loaded him up. He didn’t much like getting into the trailer by himself, but he did, so off we went. I don’t live too far from the vets so I got there in about 10 minutes, which was just a little before 8am and the office opens at 8. But they said he wouldn’t be there until around 9, even though the office is just across the driveway from his house. Must be nice! ;o) So I just left him. I figured they’d have to sedate him anyways to get it cleaned up, so that worked out just as well. I don’t think they’ll stitch it up because it’s been done too long, But hopefully it didn’t get down into his coronary band. I really couldn’t tell how big it was with all that crud on there. But he wasn’t limping, so at least that was good.
