FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

No - they didn’t even ask for one. First they wanted to trade her back for another one or have Bob work with her while they tried to sell her (thereby putting Bob in the position of showing and selling her for them) and were asking $500 over the purchase price for her.

:) The final request was could they take Slick home for a couple of weeks to see how he worked out. Bob said no since they already ruined one horse, they weren’t taking another one and messing up his mind too.

They want us to help them find a horse that would work out for them. Bob said sure, waved good-bye and then said to me, not on their life would he recommend anyone sell a horse to them.

Yeah, but all the best ones are.

Well, I’m gonna get up from here and go do something. It’s too pretty outside to not be out enjoying it. But it’s supposed to get down to 19* by tonight so we’ll be freezing out butts off by tomorrow. But that’s ok, I’ve gotta go back to work anyways. Talk to y’all later...

Terrific pictures of the horse meetings and the cliffs, as usual!

Glad to see you on Bob.

I slept in and it feels like someone partied in my body and didn’t even tell me. We were up late, but we didn’t drink that much... sheesh!

Yesterday I went out and lunged Bay a little. First dry day in weeks and I’ve barely had a chance to watch him move. Not happy with what I saw... He’s lame, and I’m getting the new old shoer out here this week to work on him, and then probably a vet check if all doesn’t shape up with a trim and shoes.

Mack went back to the hospital Sun even. His electrolyes were just off so bad from all the water pills he was on, that his breathing got bad, and he was confused and disoriented...

Anyway, he is better, but will be in there for awhile. He just won’t be able to build himself up here at home. So I’ll be scarce. I’ll check in when I can.

Frog great pictures...looks like a lot of fun.

I am glad you all know now...it’s a good feeling knowing people are thinking and praying for him. Thanks so much again.

Becky

Yes, I’m here :)

Been sorting books all day and finally finished. Part of my resolution to get organized - eight boxes of books are going to the library or the trash.

You’ll do fine here.

Darn, there's a special place in the Bad Place for folks who mess up perfectly good horses . . .

We had a trail ride today -- but I forgot to take a camera. Which is just as well -- Gracie tripped on a root and fell on her head . . . I thought her toes must be long, but she was shod 2-3 weeks ago and her feet look fine. I think she was just not paying attention, and neither was I . . . I was riding at a walk with a slack rein and turned halfway around to talk to somebody behind me. After she went down I just rolled off over her shoulder and stood up, poor baby, she landed on her face (dirt and grass all in her noseband and browband) and she couldn't get up with my weight on her. She was fine though, knees were unmarked, stepped out sound as a dollar, so I just clambered back on and off we went.

She does seem to be catching her toes a good deal, once I started paying attention I noticed her doing it slightly another 3-4 times - she has a long stride, very low to the ground, classic "daisy cutting" hunter, and the trails were rough, lots of roots, bare rock, loose stones, and mud. Only at a walk or a jog trot - never at a brisk trot or a canter. Wonder if putting her into something other than a plain shoe would help.

Becky, we'll be praying for you for sure.

I'll light a candle for Mack next time I'm over at church.

Any new years resolutions?

. . . to lost the last ten pounds. I have lost 30 and kept it off, but seem to have hit a plateau . . . shoot, it's more like the Great Alkali Desert. But my HORSE sure appreciates it!

Changing Tuffy’s shoes and angle did stop him from dragging his feet. I think probably though, she just doesn’t pick up her feet when she’s relaxing :) I swear my old mare used to go down the road asleep sometimes.

Well, she IS a very laid back horse.

She came out of the trailer a snortin' and a squealin' -- very unlike her, but we had a real cold snap last night and it was in the 30s.

But by the time she tripped, we had been a good 5-6 miles over fairly rough terrain, plus periodically there were large fields suitable for cantering, plus we found a couple of fallen trees that made great jumps. She jumps like such a lady -- beautiful soft canter approach, measures her distances, adjusts at a touch, and jumps smoothly out of her stride. It's like riding in a big, smooth limousine.

So she was probably tired (especially after the Christmas layoff - basically all the horses had two weeks standing around eating their heads off while the barn was officially closed and nobody was doing any trails or lessons, just a little hacking in the ring) and being lazy and half asleep.

Prabably takes so long because you haven’t posted much so you don’t have a posting history :)

BamBam came back, scared the people to death, they decided she was *dangerous*.

Well, I still have four bookcases full of books. I’ve been a real packrat as far as books are concerned. Plus, working in a library, I’m tempted everyday to buy one. Our Friends of the Library sell donations at $1 per book generally.

Yep, wakes her up when you ask for a canter or head towards a jump, otherwise, you’re in charge so she can snooze :)

There ARE drawbacks to having a laid back horse . . .

. . . but the upside is that I can take her anywhere, from an Opening Meet of the hunt to a noisy parade, and she just kind of looks around with this "Oh my!" look and keeps her feet steady as a rock.

You sure can't be in a hurry (unless there's something to jump, then she gets downright cantankerous).
